Why are so many male cabin crew gay?

My straight friend asked me the other day why so many male cabin crew are gay. I couldnt really think of a reason why so many gay people are attracted to the job. What do you think?

Scraglad....a feminine job???? what era do you live in?? The job attracts all types..it can also be a career for both men and women. I know that you don't mean to be disrespectful (as you say).. I disagree with you thinking it is a feminine job..but of course you are entitled to think that

Wink in my opinion...

I feel that there are many gays working in other occupations too and you cant see them because they are mostly working at the office, hiding indoors.

Furthermore, those gay people working in customer service sectors, in shopping complexes, shops, supermarkets, hairdressers, managers, fashion designer, construction workers...they all have their feminine sides too but you cant see them often as they are mostly working inside an office unlike a flight attendant where some BUT NOT all are gays where they are working in public and are seen as gay if they are feminine.

And you cant say its a feminine job as all jobs are equal these days. I can also just say that those working inside the office are feminine jobs as they just sit and work off with their brain from the computer. Flight attendant job is just similar like those people working in the customer service and hospitality area in hotels and restaurants. Does that make them look gay with the the so called "feminine job"... ALl these doesnt make any sense...

But not all gays are feminine and most are really masculine. You will be surprised that some married men are really "gay" too.

Nevertheless, you should accept and respect people as they are.. Cheers!!!

Obviously haven't met many then.

And seeings though we're generalising here it would stand to reason that a lot gay guys are generally quite caring and therefore attracted to the role.

I'm not suggesting that straight guys aren't caring, but proportionately gay guys are more likely to show it publicly.

Besides, its a job that requires you to be neat, tidy and well presented and we all know that's a genetic requirement of being gay!

fourplay .

I think the guys would be attracted to it for the fun, exotic, interesting and mysterious lifestyle and the social benefits associated .

Likewise,(generalisation) I think they have far superior customer skills and are perfect for the job than your average straight guy.

Lots of Respect, hoss

I can't answer your question, but do have a straight male friend who is an FA.

He gets plenty of grief from his mates about working as a "sky waitress" or a "hostess", or whatever other names they invent for him.

However, he always has the last laugh. He tells me he loves the job.. gets to travel to amazing destinations, and works alongside some of the most stunning looking women in the world! He is never short of a gorgeous girlfriend - and his mates wonder how he gets them. Duh boys!

topbunk think you need to look at hetrosexuals first with the spread of disease, on the last count the amount of hiv case's in hetroland is a lot higher then in gayland, go to any clap clinic around the world what do you find hetrosexuals, so its not to help the stoppage of disease.

i think a few ppl on this topic are not too sure of there sexuality, look at the meny digs nuff said.

The reason there are so many gays working in the cabin are that there are a lot of gays working in Cabin Crew Recuitment!

It's human nature to be more "attracted" to like minded people and so unconsciously be biased towards them.

If I was in recruitment all Cabin Crew would be tall, blond, drink beer, play golf and be fanatical supporters of Preston North End!!

Its my opinion that there are alot of gay men working as cabin crew because its a female dominated job, and gay men are alot more comfortable working in that environment than straight guys might be.

Oh and 'Aloyscious' and 'Bengerman'
, i dont mean to be rude, but please try not to refer to us gay people as "gays", theres something a little insulting about it if u say it like that. Im sure you didnt mean it that way of course, just try to phrase it a little better in future, thanks

One of the best F/As i know is a gay male.
One of the worst F/As i know is a gay male.

You have to be a good talker in the role of an F/A. You have to be able to take a lot of crap, and still smile and live your life. You have to cop verbal (and sometimes physical) abuse, and still come to work smiling the next day.

When I left year 12, I was one of two people in my large group of friends who wasnt gay. I saw what they went through. Basically, they were being treated like crap, verbally and physically abused, etc. 99% of the time it wasnt because they were gay, but because the person abusing them was uncomfortable about their sexuality - funnily enough, I can name about 10 of these guys that treated my friends like **** who are now 'out' - and behaving like 'I have just come out, you must worship me!'.

Now its not that F/As deserve to be treated like crap, but from what I see, most gay males who've grown up in the last 20-40 are fantastic with patientce, abuse, and smiling when you really dont feel like it. I personally think its because theres that little bit of experience dealing with it.

Not all gay guys have a rough upbringing - lets not get into theories (oh - so thats why theyre gay then? - not likely). But from my point of view, i think this has a lot to do with it.

On the other hand, the last year has taught me something.
Is anyone actually truly straight now? And is it really such a big deal anymore? Even small country backward hic towns are coming to accept it!? My old school now has its own gay community, and for a traditional private boys school that not 4 years ago would chase anyone who said they were gay out with a broom stick, or slip into their coke a concoction of panadol, domestos and nail polish remover?? Thats a big step!

I think that in the interview screening process, they are generally looking for a specific type of personality. Importantly, theyre looking for someone who wont hide in the toilets crying, or have a passenger up against the bulkhead with their knee in his mouth after he comments about sexuality/backside/phone number request/complaint/meal choice/seat allocation etc. Not all gay people are suited to this. I know plenty that would have the guy up against the bulkhead. Similarly not all women are suited to it.. However, the personality traits required seem to be most evident in gay guys.

Overall, its a job with a stereotype being that most male F/A's are gay. This is obviously not the case. So don't presume every male F/A is gay, its not fair. Its just like saying that every woman in the police is a lesbian or every guy that works in a department store (mens clothes, cologne etc) is gay. You just can't generalise. I know a lot of str8 guys which are fantastic at customer service, and far better F/A's than gay guys i know.

Gosh a short time before I started flying, there were no female cabin crew at Qantas ... all men ... so I think within the senior ranks of Qantas it is definately not seen as a feminine job.

I will put it to you ... its the year 2005 (tomorrow), who really cares what sexuality your colleague is? Gay people are no better at the job than straight people and vice versa.

This is a silly thread ... I would think there are as many straight men at qantas as gay ... if not more... my last HNL trip, all the men on it were married with kids.

The only thing I find amusing is the comments from straight men who fly (particularly pilots) in fear of the gay guys trying to hit on them .... most of them ---trust me--- no woman would hit on them, let alone a self-respecting gay man {joke}

It is not important, as long as everyone does their job well

And as for the disease comment, have a look at the largest population of HIV+ people, they are straight.

Gay Mafia

Someone suggested in an earlier reply that most airline cabin crew interviewers are gay and that they employ other friends of Dorothy`s......absolutely spot on.At the airline I work for the Cabin Crew department is populated by the Gay and Idiot Mafia(Aka the Fear of Flying Club)The idiot component is straight males and females who hate flying.Politics in this area is rampant.Straight male f/as are now in the minority. There are Royal flights(full of Queens) to just about everywhere.Tiaras should be an integral part of the uniform.
