Indian Visa

Is it possible to land in Ahmedabad and get a crew transit visa on arrival?
Understand may also be possible in Calcutta but not Nagpur, Delhi or Mumbai.
Would need to top off in Nagpur night stop and then continue on to Thailand.

For Nagpur, I confirm it is not possible to get a crew visa on arrival. Plus I highly recommend to avoid this stop.

We did a fuel stop there a few months ago (refueling was ok, avgas available), and due to weather conditions we requested to stay a few hours in the transit area, as we knew we couldn't enter the country. The local agent rejected our request, and did everything he could to make us leave asap, including threats to have us arrested if we did not depart quickly

Awful service. I won't stop there again unless both engines are out...

You obviously didnt slip him a few dollars??? Something I would recommend in that part of the world.
I ferried a Citation from India a few years ago and was told no customs had been arranged to export the aircraft.
In desperation I asked how long that would take and was told five days!
I wanted to leave in less than five hours.
$100 changed all that and customs was sorted in less than three hours

Lurchman, the only way to get your answer is to ask your handler. I didnt think you could get a crew visa on arrival for India... but they change the rules all the time. I would get a visa before landing though. Plus if you land and break down you are screwed, getting anything fixed in India or parts into the country will take at least a week. Saw this happen with a transit Citation in Kolkata a month ago, it sat for 2 weeks, the crew had to leave the country whilst waiting for the part.

For Ahmedabad if you still want to do it DO NOT use Bhadra as your handler, use Indian Airlines only, Bhadra has the most incompetent people you will ever come across in your life, and it will cause you untold hassles with customs, immigration and the tower even! Plus they charge a fortune here (Rs46 000 for a 10 000kg jet with no pax)

From the Middle east, I would recommend landing at Mumbai or Delhi first. Although these airports are busy and can make your flight time a little longer, the ground processes is more normal and efficient(ie Indian terms ie a 2 hr quick turn!!). I wouldnt do the Nagpur night stop. Nagpur and Ahmedabad are only for seasoned Indian experienced pilots in my opinion due to the hassles on the ground (took us 2 hrs to get through inbound customs last time we landed at VAAH!!). Another good option for you might be Lucknow, open 24hrs, easy customs and a decent hotel a couple of KM down the road from the airport. Kolkata is easy in and easy out too.

CREW VISA CAN BE ARRANGED ON ARRIVAL ONLY AT THE FOLLOWING:
VAAH, VIDP, VECC, VOHY, VOBL

VISA AT VABB IS NOT AVAILABLE
IF CREW STAY ONBOARD DURING A DAY STOP, NO VISAS ARE REQUIRED.

If you that, remember to land with minimum fuel as they will charge you import duty if next flight is in country.

Never ever ever ever plan to land with min fuel at Delhi or Mumbai (or any airport in India), in my 3 years here I have only once not been delayed going into Mumbai, the worst has been 2hr hold into Mumbai , and 1 hr delay into Delhi. Delhi is normally 30min extra, Mumbai depends on the time of day, but rarely less than 30 min delaying tactics are used by ATC into Mumbai.

Its not your personal money, let the boss pay the bill, he wants to fly to India! If he cant afford +/- 50c per liter in taxes he/she shouldnt own a corporate jet !

Yea, yea, after hitting send I just new someone would read it as land with zero fuel and get all heated up.

To clarify, by minimum I mean fuel that is the legal requirement plus the fuel you think you might need and makes you feel comfortable, depending on destination, weather and such. This is the way I operate, and I always have extra fuel going into India or KTEB. that said I find not really smart to land in Dehli with still 30'000lbs of fuel on board and pay fees on it.

Yes, it's the boss money, he's got plenty of it, let's just waste it.
This is really a smart and professional way to operate, and one that will insure a long life to the operation.

It's why India imposes this tax. They know crews will land with heaps because of the holding times etc.

India = rip off

If you are using Avgas, double check with the handler the day before that there is supplies at the airport, get it in writing on email. Seen a couple of planes stuck here in Kolkata due no avgas available when they arrive!

Have fun, and watch out for the morning smog for the next couple of months in India, dont plan on departing before 10am in most places as it will be less than ILS minimas. If you need help with overflight clearances for any of it give me a pm I can give you some names and emails of people who wont rip you off from India to Thailand.

Progress

In Nagpur. Cleared through Ahmedabad. Only 2hrs 30 mins delay and too many dollars.
AvGas in Nagpur only $9/gall but in barrels and the pump was crap. Fortunately took my own.
Anyone want more details might be more appropriate to PM me.
Cheaper handling?
