Learjet off runway into Guanabara Bay, Rio

There appears to be a Learjet off the end of the runway into the bay at Rio. The aircraft is intact, and I suspect the occupants would be relatively unharmed. The entertainment now is the relatively ineffective attempts to get it back onto solid ground. Anyone know more?

Here's what AP News has to say:

Small jet crashes at Brazil airport, no one killed
(AP) – 8 minutes ago
RIO DE JANEIRO — A small executive jet crashed at Rio's domestic airport Thursday, but no one was killed or seriously hurt in the accident, authorities said.
A spokesman with the Brazilian government's airport authority said the aircraft landed normally in clear weather, "but for reasons that are not yet known, it was unable to stop and skidded off the runway into the sea."
He confirmed that three people on board were rescued and were not hurt, but could not immediately say if they were the only people on board or where the plane had taken off.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to discuss the matter.
Television images showed the intact jet floating in the waters of the Guanabara Bay, just a few feet from the runway. Firefighters entered the water to secure the aircraft with ropes.
The Santos Dumont airport was closed because of the accident and had yet to reopen by midmorning.
Sounds like this could be quite entertaining. Having lived in Rio for 2 years, it wouldn't surprise me to see this become a scene of great comedy.

You're probably correct, GY, but if SDU is closed for the duration the mirth is not likely to be shared by anyone due to fly in or out of there in the meantime. That's a pretty busy little airport.

I am astounded that this hasn't happened before with a bigger aircraft. A319s and 737s routinely fly in there and the longest runway is only around 4,000ft!

Comedy or tragedy?

Garage Years may be right about comedy. About two hours ago the nosewheel was on the embankment and the aircraft was afloat in the shallows. About 20 or 30 blokes seem to have spent the intervening period, er, watching it sink.

Reminds of the time that the Brazilian Navy sunk one of their own submarines (S-21 Tonelero) while it was tied up at the dock at the sub base over in Praça Mauá on December 24th 2000. When they left it in the evening, it was bobbing quite happily at the dockside... not so by morning. If I recall rightly, someone left a valve open, and the damn thing sunk overnight in 30 feet of water.

Looks a LJ60, only 4.000ft is way too short for that aircraft...

I have been in there with a GLEX several times, thought it was hot stuff, 'til I saw the B737s circling to land. A place that concentrates the mind.

Lear jet in the water Santos Dumont Brazil

A Learjet suffered problems moments after takeoff at Santos Dumont airport in Rio de Janeiro and ended up in the water
Anac: Santos Dumont é seguro e jato derrapar foi incidente

I wasn´t going to post it, but when I told a friend he said it suffered multiple failures. He is reliable even though he said he saw it on TV..
I will try to find out more, meanwhile I am sure all of you can use Google Translate.

Portuguese to English translation.

The president of the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), Solange Vieira said late on Thursday in Sao Paulo that, despite the slippage of a jet in Santos Dumont Airport today, Rio de Janeiro, the terminal is safe and operates over capacity. She described the event as a normal case, "What happens in aviation." According to the proprietor of the ANAC, the fact that nobody has died indicates safety during takeoff and landing on the bay. "The fact that it was an incident, not an accident shows how the Santos Dumont airport is safe," he said.

This morning, Jet Taxi Aéreo Learjet OceanAir had a crash shortly after takeoff from the airport and made an emergency landing at Santos Dumont. The pilot attempted a maneuver to stop the aircraft, but the jet fell into the water near the end of the runway. The aircraft would head Galeao Airport, from where she presenter Xuxa Meneghel, according to a spokesperson.

The Air Force said it has begun investigating the factors that contributed to the accident. The initial action of verification is in charge of a team of technicians of the Third Regional Office for Research and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Seripando-3), a body linked to the Centre for Research and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Cenipa).

Goal
Solange said also that ANAC has followed the negotiations between officials of the airline Gol with the company and said the agency has a contingency plan in case of a decision by paralyzing activities on Friday. "The ANAC is monitoring the situation and has a plan if something happens," he said.

Also according to the president, the solution would accommodate passengers on other airlines Gol. The officials marked a meeting for tomorrow to define patterns of demand, proposed collective bargaining agreement and the outbreak of the strike.

The company faced last week, problems with delays and cancellations that have been caused by a failure on the scale of the employees. The company said the ANAC that the error was an update on the software used, but the system manufacturer reported that no problems were reported. Gol will be fined by the agency and the value could reach U.S. $ 5.5 million.
