TTN, I'd agree with you if this were a difficult challenge... I don't think it is; it should have been very easy to get from 'staff' to 'pike'.

The clue is pretty clear that some fiddling needed to be done with the end of the word.

If you've read my posts you'll know that there is every sign it will be solved very soon indeed, so I'm puzzled by your remark:

on the other hand this one is now around a fortnight old with no sign of being solved
I'm absolutely astonished we haven't had a correct answer yet.

If everyone is fed up and wants to move on, please do: If a new challenge is posted, I'll post the correct answer to this one, with an explanation. Over to you.

NutherA2 18th January 2012 17:45

As you say, Staff to Pike wasn't difficult, once Tip turned out to be a false lead; nor was identifying Aubagne - Foreign Legion - Kepi and re-mixing it to confirm Pike. Was Chopra's dictionary web address (SKEPDIC.COM( also intended to head in this direction?

I'm still at a loss as to where to go for the rest of the clue though; perhaps my little grey cells are becoming tired, but I did finish both the Sunday Telegraph "Enigmatic" and the Observer "AZED" on Sunday. If I don't make a break through soon I'll read your solution with much interest

TheiC 18th January 2012 17:54

NutherA2,

Good to know you're there! You can crack this!

Tip wasn't a false lead. You needed to find which hat someone in Aubagne wears (a Kepi) and then 'tip' it (re-arrange it) for Pike, as you did.

Young's Modulus and the Rotational Constant will tidy things up to find a forum favourite; our antipodean correspondents will be pleased.
Mr Chopra's dictionary was to help you get from stiffness to Young's Modulus and from going around to the rotational constant. His web address is a happy co-incidence which I hadn't spotted.

I reckon you'll have it by the time I've finished dinner, if you are watching the forum. We're having two courses!

Pausing while custard is prepared...

It occurs to me that some players may be having problems because they haven't kept an eye on other threads in this forum of late, and are not aware of the aircraft type. See my response to Herod's attempt above, and ponder Gwyneth's airfield's long-term residents for more help...

Tankertrashnav 18th January 2012 18:42

Watching with interest - I have a horrible suspicion that when someone gets it, or you reveal the answer, I will never have heard of the damned aircraft.

Fick, I am

sabredog 18th January 2012 19:04

Jindivik prototype,Pika?

TheiC 18th January 2012 19:04

TTN,

Fick I suspect you are not.

Even if you were, had you reviewed the Challenge, What Cockpit, or Heikki's Silhouette Challenge threads, you should be aware of this aircraft type.

It has featured in all of them in the last two years.

TheiC 18th January 2012 19:14

My reply to TTN crossed with sabredog's guess..

?rel=0" frameborder="0" gesture="media" allow="encrypted-media" allowfullscreen>

Sabredog got rid of Young's Modulus, E, and replaced it with the Rotational Constant, A, to get the mighty Pika...

(Sorry, my post looks correct in editing, no idea why things are doubled up above).

Sabredog has control. :ok::ok::ok::ok::ok::ok:

sabredog 18th January 2012 19:19

Thank you,theiC.
Open House.

NutherA2 18th January 2012 22:07

Thanks Sabredog for putting an end to my brain strain. Since I'd never heard of the Pika (shot a Jindivik down in 1963, though) I don't feel too bad about my lack of success.

Nice one TheiC and thanks for the debrief.

Tankertrashnav 19th January 2012 23:32

Taking advantage of the open house:

For example McQueen, a pupil, loses energy and gets spaced out

(airfield)

NutherA2 20th January 2012 09:14

This could be St Eval; home to the Kipper Fleet rather than the tanker force! Open House if right.

NutherA2 20th January 2012 19:41

Thought I might jump the gun & not wait for the referee's decision; just to keep the ball rolling:

Dee Snider, Eddie Ojeda, Jay Jay French, Mark Mendoza & A. J. Pero

TheiC 20th January 2012 20:11

A testing challenge, that...

Istres, perhaps?

NutherA2 20th January 2012 20:16

So fast! I thought it might be one for a heavy metal driver. I've been a bit idle with the Open House buck passing, so forgive me for holding on to the ball for one more :

Airfield

Commander in Chief, Authorized, New Approach and many others are confused after losing Eric Morecambe’s partner.

Tankertrashnav 20th January 2012 21:22

Many apologies - tried to post my reply earlier but the site totally froze and I couldnt post - yes of course was St Eval - too easy again!

By the way - why Istres? Think this thread is a bit above my level!

NutherA2 20th January 2012 21:49

The 5 names are the current(?) members of the group "Twisted Sister". I hope the latest one lasts a little longer.

Good night all...........

NutherA2 21st January 2012 21:44

Perhaps I was a bit too cryptic, time for a hint or two?The airfield is no longer active and the RAF have left, but the buildings & runways are (I think) as they were 56 years ago when I got my wings there.

Commander in Chief, Authorized, New Approach and many others are confused after losing Eric Morecambe’s partner.

First thing is to recognise what they have in common, this may help?
Authorized (2007 – Frankie Dettori); New Approach (2008 Kevin Manning); Commander in Chief (1993 Kevin Manning).

Tankertrashnav 22nd January 2012 17:11

Might it be Swinderby?

NutherA2 22nd January 2012 18:44

Well done TT, I was beginning to worry that I had overcomplicated the thread to death. As you have deduced:

Authorized (2007 – Frankie Dettori); New Approach (2008 Kevin Manning); Commander in Chief (1993 Kevin Manning) were all DERBY WINNERS.

Eric Morecambe used to address his vertically challenged mate as ERN, so:

DERBYWINNERS losing ERN gives a confused Swinderby.

Thanks again & “You have control”
