The empty weight was more than 40 kg but not very much.

Lightning Mate 22nd July 2011 13:57

Then I assume it had no engine.

A glider?

RegDep 22nd July 2011 14:01

Yes, a glider.

In the first tests that took place during winter 1922-1923, it was towed behind a sled but, due to snow and uneven terrain, the glider did not take off.
Flew later quite successfully, though.

Lightning Mate 22nd July 2011 14:28

Something by Rotter?

RegDep 22nd July 2011 14:30

Not Hungarian.

Lightning Mate 22nd July 2011 14:36

Was that first launch attempt at Wasserkuppe?

RegDep 22nd July 2011 14:42

No. Over one thousand miles away.

Lightning Mate 22nd July 2011 14:44

Maybe Russia then.

RegDep 22nd July 2011 14:47

Yes, somewhere where there are sleds and snow…..

Lightning Mate 22nd July 2011 15:01

Is it one of the AVFs?

RegDep 22nd July 2011 15:05

Not one of those Mate.

Alert red: RR

Lightning Mate 22nd July 2011 15:16

No problem - I must leave you.

SincoTC 22nd July 2011 20:56

Abend Reg :),

Still a bit quiet I see!

Not going to help much I'm afraid, but at least you might get to go to bed in peace!

I'm pretty certain that it's the Arzeulov A-5 ?

Open House again if it is please, as I've got another early start again tomorrow!

Edit: My bed beckons as 4am will soon be here! Nite Mate, sleep well :ok:

RegDep 22nd July 2011 21:12

Arzeulov A-5
Correct TC.

Good night. Sleep well.

TC has requested Open House, which is hereby declared.

Glider designed by Arzeulov in 1921, built with the help of his friends in the gliding club of the Military Academy of the Air Force.

The first tests took place during winter 1922-1923, towing it behind a sled, but due to snow and uneven terrain, the aircraft did not take off.

The following summer, July 24, 1923, A-5 was successfully tested on Khodynka airport (Moscow), towed behind a car. The glider ascended to the height of 15 m, then flow perfectly controlled.

In the first contest of Theodosia, Crimea, 1923, A-5 received the grand prize and made a record with a flight duration of 1 hour 2 minutes 30 seconds.

Then, in 1924, another A-5 was built, either identical or slightly modified from the first aircraft. In the second contest of the Crimea in 1924 it was able to beat the gliders "Icarus" (Икар), "Ilich" (илъич), "Pioneer-Leninist" (Пионер-Ленинец) and "Red Student" (Красный студент).
