Dundee? OH if by fluke correct.

OUAQUKGF Ops 6th Jun 2021 11:55

Well Max and Jn14:6 - almost a photo-finish. Thank you Dundee Riverside it is. Asturias I really thought you were going to nail it but alas not. The answer lay in Marmalade. A few snaps to finish up with.

Max Tow has declared OH.

Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silv’ry Tay!
Alas! I am very sorry to say
That ninety lives have been taken away
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember’d for a very long time.

Or not, as the case may be.

OUAQUKGF Ops 7th Jun 2021 11:47

Thank you Allan - the poetry of William McGonagall - I resisted the temptation to use him as a clue thinking that Marmalade was bad enough !

Asturias56 7th Jun 2021 17:45

That's the "new" bridge in the picture - I've always thought it looked a bit dodgy as well................

Asturias56 7th Jun 2021 17:52

here's one to be getting on with...

Is it one of the air strips on Malta ?

Asturias56 7th Jun 2021 21:25

No - but men doing their best in tough conditions.

Thanks Asturias!
I intended to post as an additional clue but did not notice that my first blurr of the title was apparently not saved.
The refinery was built in 1909 but the oil business really took off some years later.

Now this international/private helicopter spot:

Asturias56 10th Jun 2021 08:03

Blue skies, possibly a rather stylish wall at the back, very carefully trimmed grass edges - maybe Europe Bear?

And a statue off to the left - is this someone with an aviation connection?

sycamore 10th Jun 2021 10:22

Landing fees must be `sky-high` there....

Self loading bear 11th Jun 2021 06:37

The stylish wall from the other side.
The statue has nothing to do with aviation.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....156939a89.jpeg

I think sycamore knows...

ea200 11th Jun 2021 08:27

That's the Vatican City pad.

Exactly!
An elevated pad once you are over the wall.

You have control

ea200 11th Jun 2021 10:59

Thanks Bear. Thought it looked Italian from your first picture, then recognised the architecture from the second. Walked past there a few times.
Let's try this one:

Asturias56 11th Jun 2021 11:37

England's Green and Pleasant Land?

OUAQUKGF Ops 11th Jun 2021 13:39

Stoke by Nayland ?

dixi188 11th Jun 2021 15:45

Is the airstrip in a shallow valley or is it a trick of the camera lens?

ea200 12th Jun 2021 11:31

OUAQUKGF is near enough. It is actually nearest to the village of Nayland and is known as such, but also as Hill Farm. Surprised it has not featured before but it is not on the Wiki. Good place to practice for your mountain rating. Have checked out a few people for landing there.

As regards the picture, although the ground does rise on either side of the runway it is not as obvious as the camera seems to make it.

OUAQUKGF has control.

OUAQUKGF Ops 12th Jun 2021 11:53

Thanks ea200 bit of a fluke but somewhere in the dusty recesses of my old head I recalled watching this video...... Superb country-side of The Stour Valley.

Will have to be OH !

OPEN HOUSE

Asturias56 13th Jun 2021 12:04

A lot of my pictures of this place show it to be cloudy but it can be very sunny and warm here

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....2f0dcecb9c.jpg

ea200 13th Jun 2021 12:30

The obstructions and portable fire fighting suggest it may be used for non-aviation purposes. Motor sports or record setting maybe. Long shot but its flat enough to be Elvington.

sycamore 13th Jun 2021 14:16

Or maybe Bedford...?

moe helicopter operations?

Asturias56 13th Jun 2021 17:43

They do operate helicopters from here but it has a long runway - it's labeled "International" but I think that that aspect is mainly freight. The military also operate there. It's not in the UK

Duchess_Driver 13th Jun 2021 18:33

Challons Vatry, LFOK? Always sunny on a non-flying day. Low overcast when work to be done!!!

Asturias56 14th Jun 2021 07:43

No, although the scenery isn't too dissimilar (at least in the photo I posted). I've had a lot of bother finding out any history on this challenge - I suspect it's over 50 or 60 years old but no old pictures anywhere

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....ae95492847.jpg

jensdad 14th Jun 2021 16:40

Hi Asturias, the scenery's a bit reminiscent of Castile. Could it be Badajoz?

Asturias56 15th Jun 2021 08:05

It does like like bits of Spain but I'm afraid not - perhaps further east?

Oops, sorry for the delay in replying. I know Corlu, between Istanbul and the Bulgarian border, has a bit of freight traffic. Not sure about the helicopters though... Plus I suspect it's a bit more mountainous around there, so I'm probably wrong :)

Asturias56 18th Jun 2021 08:30

You are in the right sort of area and on the correct continent but still quite aways away.

This place claims to be International but as I think I said its probably only freight that's international.

You're not getting many takers on this one Asturias :) I'll have another punt at Nis, Serbia. Don't know much about the place except that I don't think there's much in the way of passenger traffic, but I've seen a video of an IL62 freighter doing an extremely late take-off there!

Asturias56 20th Jun 2021 08:01

I know - you're sort of getting close (-ish) - I'm not sure if we've ever had a challenge from this country TBH - It's not a "destination" for anyone I know

Asturias,

As I have the latest update of the database I have a small advantage on the other contestants.
I will therefore not post my answer (yet)
I can confirm this country is not in the database.
For that sake everybody can also use the list of W-A mk3.

Looks like you and I have the same idea:
Post challenges of countries not yet featured before.
(See Vatican City)
In Europe we still have 3 or 4 left.

I am working on getting the updated list posted but for the moment this only seems feasible via a link to a URL (cloud server). I am not aware I have such cloud server. If somebody knows how or is willing to do for me then please send PM.
