It'll be an absolute tinker without something to get the ball rolling; 1967 and Antipodal.

Whenuapai, NZ. (I have an almost identical picture from 1970)

Happy searching! |

They've operated some quite large aircraft in there occasionally. Iberia have used A330-200's on some flights from Madrid in the past (maybe even as late as last year) - obviously NOT at max weight.
Strange place......... https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....bd1eef89ee.jpg |
"It'll be an absolute tinker without something to get the ball rolling;"
Sifty - most of the regulars on here LOVE an absolute stinker....................... all teh easy ones have been done. I think the latest list published by Bear has over 3400 challenges - some are duplicated of course but it's quite percentage of the worlds airfields (and the Pope's Helipad) already been through the mill. |
Good guess but not Whenuapai Shackman. Probably time for a clue; This was the largest aircraft type to provide a scheduled service and they were severely performance limited at that. (Aircraft depicted is not at challenge location).

Norfolk Island?
|
I'll have a shot at another place I'd love to visit, Chatham Island. Wikipedia tells me that the airfield is next to a lagoon, and that the RNZAF once had Sunderlands based there...
|
Could it be Whangarei?
OH if correct. |

Lauriebe gets it with Onerahi, Whangarei. SLB has the back story. NZ4114 was struck off charge in Feb 1967; the venerable Sunderlands haven been replaced with the thoroughly modern Lockheed P3 onions.
OH |
None of the historic airfield is on this photograph; this is the memorial associated with it. The actual airfield site was more or less directly behind me when I took the pic. Not entirely sure how far behind - I'm not local to this locality...

Sutton Bridge. OH if correct. River Nene? Name of a jet engine.
|
Apologies for the delay in responding.
Yes indeed, it is RAF Sutton Bridge, a former training base next to the River Nene in Lincolnshire, UK. I didn't actually know there had been an airfield there - I just stopped to take a photo of the Crosskeys Bridge while driving back from Norfolk in May, and came across the memorial next to the road. I nearly ended up in the Nene, the grass on that embankment gets very slippy when it's been raining. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....3519bc431c.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....27b2833941.jpg Get me some traffic has control. |
OH I'm afraid.
|
OH… OK, A bit unconventional, but perhaps as a stocking filler someone can crack the location of the photo I left on post 206.
shouldn’t last too long. Sifty |
Is it on the South Island?
|
Te Wai Pounamu it is.
|
Lo siento, No hablo Maori
might be Invercargill? |
Too hilly for Invercargill Asturias. You’ll have to go north, but no further than 40’30secs south.
|
Could it be Hōkitika?
|
Not Hokie (as the local folk would have it) Lauriebe.
Definitely time for a clue: The runway is / was too short to permit Viscount services, and at a nearby art gallery one keeps thinking of Wuthering Heights (and getting sloshed on Pinot Noir of course - this is NZ!). |
Could it be Nelson Airport? Quite a short runway there.
It also seems to be in a pinot noir area and, after looking around the interweb, there is a Bronte Gallery nearby. Forgot to add OH if correct. |
NZNS Nelson it is. Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson and 1st Duke of Bronte.
The apron and terminal have been substantially reconfigured since this photo was taken in 1970. I'm not sure if the attractive white park bench on the left of the shot was the business lounge or not... OH declared. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....197f44ec50.png |
Sadly this runway is no longer used for aircraft but great food stalls nearby and it had an important role in the past.

Ross Smith Drive in Parap, Darwin.
Was the original runway in Darwin before the current airfield was constructed. There is a windsock in a little park at the South East end. OH as I cant get at any of my pics at present. CC |
It’s Ross Smith Avenue, rather than Drive. But you’re right with all the rest. Probably the only aerodrome I had a chance of identifying.
The old Qantas hangar is still in position but used as a motor museum. |
And here is a picture of the good old days..
Many years ago I was walking to the Parap Markets for breakfast (a known hangover cure in those days) by a (then) young friend with whom I had imbibed the evening before. As we walked along the road I looked up and saw the old hanger and realised we were walking along an old runway.. One of many fond memories of Darwin from the 1980's. CC has it and has declared Open House. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....b4b0f2601f.jpg MJG |
This one is quite busty but not all that well known

Could be an Azerbeidzjani MiG-29.
|

Azeri MiG-29 participated in Exercise Anatolian Eagle from Konya Air base Turkey. I just found a matching interior photo: https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....3919a281e.jpeg |
