It's a pretty desperate spot TBH - as a colleague said "there's colonialism and Colonialism but these poor sods have had 400 years of the Portuguese - who invented the concept of benign neglect - including a punitive Japanese occupation followed by 40 years of Indonesian occupation and oppression. None of the occupying powers had a great record of administration to put it mildly...."

At one point there was a monster vehicle park just outside of Dilli - it was full of Toyota Land Cruisers, JCB's, trucks, bulldozers. All paid for by Japan - and when the aid program came to an end after about 7 years the Japanese left and the vehicles were all neatly parked and left to rot - they weren't even stolen............................

The scenery is fantastic and the people are really nice - unless they get riled.

Nothing to offer at the moment, so OPEN HOUSE.

Asturias56 19th Feb 2024 20:56

may I ask if you've been there Chimbu? I've been to Dili but not to the enclave

tried once or twice in Indonesian times to get to E Timor but even West Timor flights were always "fully booked",,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, especially for Westerners

Another airport, that hasn't really 'taken-off' [sorry for the pun] and is down to only a couple of scheduled flights a day...

No, not yet.

A few years ago it looked like I might go there, but it didn't happen. I have been to Dili a couple of times and would like to go back and take a look around.

Zielona Gora -

MAC 40612 21st Feb 2024 16:26

Yes, well done to SLB who was first to get the correct answer and Descol. Zielona Gora/Babimost is correct. This was a joint use military and civil airport, with the civil Terminal being built in the mid 1970s to allow domestic flights. After the fall on the 'Iron Curtain' and the opening up of Eastern Europe various proposals we put in to expand the airport both for civilian passenger and cargo traffic but none have really got anywhere. I think there is another proposal for a new terminal in again now, we shall see if it comes to anything....
An amusing story from me, from the days back in the 1970s when it was a very active fast-jet training base for the Polish Air Force. In my early teenage years, I was visiting relatives who lived in a nearby town to this airport/airbase and was struck by the number of low level passes over the town of the air force jets. It transpired that for a while the trainee pilots thought it was a 'great laugh' to fly at extremely low level over the local lakes [just to the East of the field] and then pull up at the last moment over the local town, much to the annoyance of the local population. The locals, quite unhappy at the situation, complained to their local town council, who in turn raised the issue with the local base. In true 'Communist era' fashion, the reply came back, if any of the townsfolk 'got the number' of any of the aircraft involved in such manoeuvres, they would reprimand the pilots. On hearing this I took it as a green light to stand out on my Uncle's balcony with a pair of binoculars attempting to read off the low-flying MiGs [well they were actually Lims, Polish built MiGs] I think I nearly gave my late father a heart attack when he saw what I was doing...I suspect I was the only 'aircraft spotter' from Western Europe at the time in Poland reading off military aircraft :)

Thanks Mac!
Good to read a personal story about an airport.
This one has not yet featured before:

Lots of trees!

Sign says "arriving passengers" in English, place looks like it needs a coat of paint

Caribbean? Bear often stomps around there IIRC
