It’s a Scottish aviation pioneer…

Zaxis 28th Dec 2023 11:35

.... and their next design was a twin!

BEagle 28th Dec 2023 17:28

Gibson Caledonia No.2 biplane.

Zaxis 28th Dec 2023 21:25

Correct, Beagle you have control.
Nearly 1st aeroplane in Scotland, inspired by Farman.

Should it be the Shadower - please take control oncemorealoft. :ok:
Cheers.

BEagle 29th Dec 2023 10:40

The hideously ugly G.A.L.38 Fleet Shadower it is indeed!

oncemorealoft; you have control!

Another ugly one was the Short SB3

To be fair, the Airspeed AS.39 to the same requirement was only marginally less hideous. Perhaps the design brief was "See if you can outdo Blackburn in the ugly department."

Strewth! I thought something as esoteric as that would last a bit longer!
Noyade's back in business.

Asturias56 4th Jan 2024 12:42

Its often the boring US identikit private aircraft that last a long time on here - the really weird tend to stick in people's memories

I have a dozen REALLY boring possibilities but to the challenge

American?

oldpax 5th Jan 2024 10:41

Interesting.

Other than the engine exhausts could be a Varsity!!

Asturias56 5th Jan 2024 12:00

Quite a tubby fuselage.................

Noyade 5th Jan 2024 18:46

Not from the US.
Not a Varsity.
Wiki says only one built.
Soviet engines.

Warsaw pact country?

Noyade 6th Jan 2024 18:38

Not a Warsaw pact country.

sycamore 6th Jan 2024 21:13

Possibly Chinese....or S American....?

Noyade 6th Jan 2024 21:33

Yes mate - 'Made in China.' :)

Gawd! I'm still struggling - to construct a google query................... but my 1960-61 Janes refers to a "Yungari Nokadaun" without any drawings or pictures. Googling that suggests it might be the challenge

thnarg 7th Jan 2024 09:03

Is it this one…?

sycamore 7th Jan 2024 13:04

There`s even a Harrier in that yard, wherever it is...

BEagle 7th Jan 2024 14:55

The twin is the Beijing-1, which is preserved at the Beijing Aviation Museum. As is Harrier GR3 XZ965!

Asturias56 7th Jan 2024 15:36

https://www.secretprojects.co.uk/thr...e-1950s.37840/

lists a herd of one-off small Chinese aircraft of that era

BAC 221?

BEagle 8th Jan 2024 19:15

Zaxis well done! It was indeed the BAC 221!

You have control!

Zaxis 8th Jan 2024 22:23

So I bag another 1960's British research aircraft! Roll on the H126 and HP115.
Converted from Fairey FD2 but something has always bugged me. Why did they convert WG774 which had held to world speed record, first over 1000 mph, in 1956 and not the near identical non record holding WG777? Not many countries would deliberately destroy the originality of such a national icon. Anyone any idea why?

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....6376161069.jpg

For the next challenge I'll offer this ...

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....18c3966123.jpg

BEagle 8th Jan 2024 23:14

Tu-91 Bychok

WG774 had a more powerful engine than WG777, so perhaps that was the reason?

Herod 9th Jan 2024 08:29

Zaxis; I agree with you. I spend quite a bit of time in proximity to 777, and have the same question (although BEagle may have answered it). My guess is Philistines working in an office somewhere.
