Harmon it is. Well done nvubu, you have control.
Harmon AFB was closed in 1949 and was merged with the neighboring Naval Air Station Agana, which is now the civil airport.

Damn.. i've been there as well......

India Four Two 26th Dec 2017 10:44

Like nvubu, I can't see any go Terry's images. Just a question mark.

nvubu 26th Dec 2017 12:45

First one I've have a success without seeing any of the images :ok:. Here's the photo I have that let me to Harmon and Agana - image taken while in Japanese hands.

Like nvubu, I can't see any go Terry's images. Just a question mark.
When I access PPRuNe via Safari I also only see question marks. However when I access via Firefox I can see the full images.

nvubu 26th Dec 2017 18:09

I've always been able to see Terry's images previously - just checked some previous ones, they are OK. I use IE normally.

In Edge Firefox, Opera & Chrome the images are OK

I had wondered if it is one of Microsoft's "upgrades" where they are trying to force you to use Edge by removing capability in IE - YouTube videos no longer work for me in IE either.

Yes. Me too. I used to have crew layovers at a nice beach resort in that area, and never realised that there used to be an airfield so close to the civil airport.
I knew about the large military airfields at the North end of the island, with their multiple runways, so mentioning a single runway must have been a clue that nvubu pounced on. :{

The lack of images is wierd. I did exactly as I had done before and linked to images in my dropbox, so it appears to be a browser issue.
Next time I will try uploding to a PPRuNe album and linking there.

Terry Dactil 26th Dec 2017 20:19

and the next mystery aerodrome is
Somewhere in the Pacific theatre?

Just tried Firefox on my Mac - I can see the images unlike Safari, where I only see "?". Very odd.

The device I'm using is an ASUS Netbook. It came with Win 10 installed but I've never used that as I downloaded Chrome as soon as I got it home. Doesn't stop it 'freezing' for 15 minutes every week or so for Microsoft updates and a caption occasionally appears pleading with me to use Microsoft Edge when I'm opening Chrome.
I only get a question mark instead of a photo when someone tries to post the photo using Photobucket.

Yes - Pacific theatre.

This flight to the mystery aerodrome originated in Guam.

Jacksons Field Port Moresby PNG?

nvubu 27th Dec 2017 10:19

Not PNG.

The C54 was carrying high priority personnel, medical equipment and supplies. On the return trip to Guam they carried wounded patients.

eckhard 27th Dec 2017 10:35

Tinian?
Saipan?

nvubu 27th Dec 2017 10:48

Neither Tinian or Saipan.

It was a 6 hour flight from Guam.

Heathrow Harry 27th Dec 2017 17:31

S Korea? Somewhere like Ulsan???

nvubu 27th Dec 2017 17:38

Not S Korea - further south.

broadreach 27th Dec 2017 17:47

Six hours in a C54 would be around 1,200/1,300 miles. About right for either Okinawa or Manila. Yontan on Okinawa was the first airfield captured by the Allies. It's no longer in use but the broad avenue in its place has a hill behind it that closely resembles the one in nvubu's photo.

nvubu 27th Dec 2017 18:42

Well done Broadreach - Yontan, Okinawa it is. Photos taken 10 July 1945.

You have the floor.

broadreach 27th Dec 2017 21:25

Thanks nvubu and I have to declare Open House. You provided a few super clues, without which I'd never have been able to get near a solution. Six hours from Guam and the usual cargo back and forth could have applied equally to Yokinawa or Manila. I wasn't too sure abut my dates - Okinawa v Philippines - but suspected that extraction of the wounded to Guam would more likely have been from Japan's islands than from SE Asia.

After posting Yontan I went back to Gurgle and had a great disappointment: searched for "C54 Yontan" and came up with a derivative of your image challenge. Which of course knocked all the air out of awaiting your confirmation or not of my earlier guess.

Again< Open House

Another four-engined transport, nowhere near Okinawa.

Terry Dactil 28th Dec 2017 06:04

Hmmm...
RAF Hastings in some distant outpost of the British Empire.
Malaysian peninsula perhaps?

Heathrow Harry 28th Dec 2017 07:59

Doubt it - looks like snow on the ground......

Heathrow Harry 28th Dec 2017 08:06

I think it 's British Columbia - maybe Peace River/Fort St John????

TheChitterneFlyer 28th Dec 2017 10:41

Described as being the best three-engined aeroplane ever built!

Heathrow Harry 28th Dec 2017 10:47

I have a feeling it was used for testing heavy aircraft at one point - might be wrong.......

India Four Two 28th Dec 2017 15:52

Fort St. John, BC.

The photo is dated 1948, which is the year the Hastings went into service, so maybe this one was in Canada for cold weather trials.

Harry has the con.

Heathrow Harry 28th Dec 2017 15:56

I came across it when I was checking out your Edmonton Namao challenge so it looked awfully familiar....

Somewhere warmer this time

nvubu 28th Dec 2017 17:03

Alicante ?

Heathrow Harry 28th Dec 2017 17:09

No - but near the Med

nvubu 28th Dec 2017 19:59

Hmmmm... what do you classify as the Med :)

Looking on both Google & Bing Maps - I can see that the "Med" how I thought of it is actually made up of a number of seas - of which the Mediterranean Sea is but one part - the biggest part.
  • Alboran Sea
  • Balearic Sea
  • Sea of Sardinia
  • Ligurian Sea
  • Tyrrhenian Sea
  • Ionian Sea
  • Adriatic Sea
  • Aegean Sea
  • Thracian Sea
  • Sea of Crete
  • Mediterranean Sea
So do you mean the "Med" as a whole?
Or just the "Med" part of the "Med"?

jensdad 28th Dec 2017 23:54

The large stand number (if that's what's on the notice) and the lack of nose-in parking makes me think it's a low-cost terminal at a large airport. Could it be Marseilles? I seem to remember that they built a terminal for Ryanair and maybe other loco carriers a few years ago and there was a load of controversy when Ryanair pulled out shortly afterwards.

Heathrow Harry 29th Dec 2017 07:51

Nvubu - the "Med" so you don't get it in 10 minutes!!:cool:

Jensdad is on the right lines - large airport but really only a LOCO destination - not Marseille

Also military use

chevvron 29th Dec 2017 07:58

How about Pisa?

Heathrow Harry 29th Dec 2017 08:00

Right country - but I think we've had Pisa twice al;ready in 2017...... as you can see - definitely LOCO

https://www.pprune.org/members/32618...-28-093533.jpg

chevvron 29th Dec 2017 08:06

Cagliari then?

Heathrow Harry 29th Dec 2017 08:38

Still in the correct country but not Sardinia................

I must admit if I hadn't been there it would have passed me by but it's a lot bigger than I expected

golfbananajam 29th Dec 2017 09:31

Vincenzo Florio Airport Trapani–Birgi (IATA: TPS, ICAO: LICT) on Sicily

Heathrow Harry 29th Dec 2017 12:33

Correct!! Over to golfbj

Big place at the extreme west end of Sicily - lots of military activity - Typhoons and AW 139's based there and regular NATO AWACS visitors

nvubu 29th Dec 2017 17:05

HH - That doesn't look like Trapani :(
