Not RAF Yatesbury.....

Russell Gulch 15th Sep 2012 18:28

The original photo shows an outline that is surprisingly similar to Gartree prison on the old Market Harborough airfield, so I searched to see if any other post-war airfields had been so adapted.

Your last post indicates that my search was futile, but it was still fun looking!

I still have no clue where your challenge is!

RAF Watchfield, A420 cuts across it and the hangars have been replaced with a business park

BEagle 15th Sep 2012 19:13

Ah, tally-ho, yippety-dip and zing zang spillip!

It is indeed RAF Watchfield!

The photo was orientated roughly south, which might have confused you. But look at the shadows......

NavEx, you have the helm!

chevvron 16th Sep 2012 02:58

Very clever mosaic Beags.

BEagle 16th Sep 2012 07:35

Cheers, chevvron!

The colour overlay had to be rotated and resized, using the long side of the depot buildings as a reference dimension, then aligned with the 2 roads before being pasted. Then the whole image was cropped and reset to 800 pixels

NavEx, you've got until 1932 this evening, then we'll assume OH!

JW411 16th Sep 2012 16:31

I used to throw LandRovers and Trailers at Watchfield.

Sorry for the thread drift.

BEagle 16th Sep 2012 17:38

NavEx has PM'd that he is down route, so has asked me to provide another challenge. So, here we go:

Goxhill per chance? oh in unlikely event of my suggestion being correct...

asw22 16th Sep 2012 19:15

It is indeed Goxhill....quite well preserved I would say...It is now quite rare to see outside dispersal areas still intact or so...

chevvron 16th Sep 2012 19:36

Definitely Goxhill from the north.

BEagle 16th Sep 2012 21:27

Yes, 'Goat Hill' indeed it is!

OH then......

asw22 16th Sep 2012 23:10

This will be my first one...It should not be too difficult this airfield being quite well known...

Note that a better image can be found here:

I have tried to show a reduced image with a link to the larger one but did not succeed.

PS: At time of posting it was OH: I just hope I followed the rules...Do not hesitate to let me know just in case...

spook 17th Sep 2012 09:08

Saint Omer?

asw22 17th Sep 2012 09:36

Excellent Spook!

It is indeed Saint Omer/Wizernes, ca Nov 1943...I hope you got to look to the larger picture which is reallybeautiful in detail. The airdrome was fully operational (and stayed that way to the end).
Be prepared I have many of those war airfields (that's a pet passion of mine)..

You have the helm!

spook 18th Sep 2012 12:58
