as it is open house here is a easy one.

Obviously not that easy. I assume it's an RAF station in the UK judging by the runway.

chevvron 2nd Apr 2010 13:21

According to the PAPIs you were well above the glidepath.

leader3 2nd Apr 2010 14:52

hands free you are right in that it is a RAF station.

and there is a reason for being high on the approach which i will explain later.

handsfree 2nd Apr 2010 15:00

Boscombe Down ?

chevvron 2nd Apr 2010 15:14

It's not too clear on my 10" screen but I'd say the taxyway pattern is wrong for Boscombe, more like Newquay/St Mawgan.

handsfree 2nd Apr 2010 15:21

Presumably the high approach is to clear any AG.
Boscombe came to mind as it has a mix of concrete and asphalt runways. RWY 35 look most likely but doesn't seem to quite match.

Background Noise 2nd Apr 2010 15:56

More like 05?

handsfree 2nd Apr 2010 16:01

Background Noise.
Having had another and closer look I'd agree with you. 05 appears to be quite a good match.

leader3 2nd Apr 2010 19:32

Handsfree you are spot on with Boscombe Down and
rwy 05.
you are also correct in that it was best to land long to avoid the arrestor gear, hence the high approach.
so over to you handsfree.

Here's an old one:

Traffic appears to be driving on the left but difficult to be positive. If so, then given the trees and flying chappies liking to get things done in the morning, I'd hazard a pop at the east coast of Oz.

larssnowpharter 3rd Apr 2010 12:24

I would not worry too much about the side of the road the traffic is on. There are twin possibilities here:

1. It may well be that it changed.
2. There is some controversy as to whether this photo is a reversed image or not. My belief is that it is not and I have flown out of and into this airfield on a number of occasions.

Not Oz as you may have guessed.

Nichols Field, Pasay, Philippines ?

larssnowpharter 4th Apr 2010 03:41

Afraid not sir. However, the right country.

leader3 4th Apr 2010 09:00

the only one i can think of in that part of the world
that has a approach from over the sea.

is Bacolod on Negros Occ

Mr_Grubby 4th Apr 2010 09:45

Guiuan Airfield, also known as Samar Airfield, Philippines.

C.

larssnowpharter 4th Apr 2010 10:31

'Fraid not Mr G.

Clues:

1. This airfield had a seaplane base nearby.
2. A sad tale attaches to it.

Mr_Grubby 4th Apr 2010 12:16

I beg to differ Sir !!!
