Norton, San Bernadino, California.

PaperTiger 27th Aug 2008 00:40

Close but no cigar.

Fishtailed 27th Aug 2008 16:38

George AFB Victorville army airfield, California

PaperTiger 27th Aug 2008 16:43

Right State, wrong airfield.

Fishtailed 27th Aug 2008 17:29

Is it Santa Anna, now John Wayne Airport?

PaperTiger 27th Aug 2008 18:17

Not Santa Ana, Pilgrim.

The airport is still in use, one of the original hangars in the photo survived until December 2007 when it was then demolished :{ .

Perhaps this will help:

Last try, Burbank. (film connection?)

ARCHIE1 27th Aug 2008 21:01

Van Nuys Metropolitan

PaperTiger 27th Aug 2008 21:15

Archie has it :ok:.

Van Nuys aka San Fernando Valley aka L.A. Metropolitan.
Not usually thought of as an Air Base, but used by many years by the AAF and then the CAL ANG who moved out because the runway was too short for their 'new' F-100s.

(Casablanca was the film BTW)

ARCHIE1 27th Aug 2008 21:28

Thank you.

I don't have anything suitable to hand so it's Open House or as Captain Renault (left of screen) would have said - "Round up the usual suspects!"

Warmtoast 27th Aug 2008 22:02

As it's Open House again an easy one which should last about 10 minutes!

Duckbutt 27th Aug 2008 22:42

Is it Northolt?

Duckbutt 28th Aug 2008 13:37

OK then, I think it may be a photo taken at Northolt by Edward Malindine for the Daily Herald on 4th March 1938 showing Hurricane 1's of 111 Squadron who had reequipped with them a couple of months previously from Gladiators.

It is possible that the second machine in the row, L1550, crashed at Colnbrook on the 14th July that year, killing the pilot.

It is also possible that some people on this site have too much time on their hands!

Warmtoast 28th Aug 2008 16:36

Duckbutt is right.

111 Sqn showing off their new Hurricane 1's at Northolt in 1938.

Duckbutt - your turn.

Duckbutt 28th Aug 2008 16:55

Thank you Warmtoast. Have a go at this one:

Fishtailed 28th Aug 2008 19:16

Somewhere in SEA, North Vietnam, Hanoi?

Duckbutt 28th Aug 2008 19:43

Right part of the world.

Duckbutt 29th Aug 2008 10:33

The airfield has not been used for over 60 years now and was built in the mid 1930's on the orders of uninvited 'guests' and initially used as a staging post for return journeys to cities in another country. Local labour was used who to say the least did not receive the minimum wage.

The aircraft shelters visible are reinforced and consequently survived. Since the field fell into disuse local farmers have cultivated the areas around them, as shown here:
