As I am reliably in formed, the B47 drag chute on approach was there so that the engines - old style turbo jets remember - could be kept spooled up to a useful RPM in case of G/A. Those old stovepipe engines had diabolical spool up times from idle.
I wonder whether the chute was dropped in the event of a G/A and if so, what about the subsequent approach?

I saw them at Brize or Fairford in the early 1960s doing circuit touch and gos with the chute out all the way.

I was a little surprised to see a B47 with the chute streamed pass in front of me at 9000ft when I was running in to drop a 25 pounder on Otmoor. Bound for Heyford I suppose, but it did seem a long way out.
