Some clues then...

It's a Pratt and Whitney R-1535-7 engine.
Circa 1936.
The aircraft is serving with the 118th Observation Squadron Guard.
Photographed in the maintenance hangar at Brainart Field, Hartford.

Douglas O-46A. Additional clues not needed. There were plenty of clues in your initial photograph. Good photo by the way..

Well it wasn't and I didn't recognise it from a well known photo, but is it the rare and very ugly Tunison Scout?

G'day Graeme,

is it the rare and very ugly Tunison Scout?
Yes it is mate, well done

With the prominent twin banks of the engine and those "droopy moustache" exhaust pipes, 'tiz a real ugly bugger innit

Noyade has control
