I'm making a bold assumption that the front is to the left because the guy in the picture taking a photograph would probably want the "pretty" end.

No, we have had that before and the M-50 appeared in a famous flypast over Moscow in 1961, note that I did say above that this particular aircraft never flew, keep digging

What was intended to be the production Bounder, fitted with the engines it was designed for, the Zubets 16-17 turbojets replacing the original Dobrynin units of the M-50 "proof of concept" prototype, whose lack of power rather limited its preformance. One M-52 was completed but was never tested in the air before the program was terminated due to the development of the ICBMs and the priority assigned to the Soviet space program..
