Yes it is a prop. Aircraft from the same era as the XP-46. Not American...

G'day SD.

There is a thread on a WW2 forum called "What is it?" and I saw your image there not long ago. Even now I still find it hard to get my head around this, but according to the poster it's the Fiat CR.42?
