Actually I've now looked at it on G Earth and I might be fooling myself by the proximity of the sea. The challenge could be photographed from the north.

The landscape looks a little Canarian or Azorean. The apparent era and aircraft type(s) makes me think of one of the transit airfields in the Azores. I'll take a punt at Lajes?

I got it last time because I once landed there in an RAF Sea King on a "jolly".
We flew all the ASR pilots in a Jaguar and this was a reciprocal trip. Fair amount of torque available in the Sea King I can tell you.
