Here is a read only link to the Aerodrome Database - WhichAerodrome.xlsx. Up to date as of 1/5/2019. Catching up slowly - up to May 2019 now (Mar 2020).

Here are some "rules" for Which Aerodrome. These are based upon the original suggestions from the very first thread, and have a few additions. Also please be patient as when you are active others may be asleep.
  • A historic picture of an aerodrome will be posted. Newer pictures are allowed but the theme here is to compare/contrast old with new as well as identifying aerodromes which no longer exist.
  • The person who correctly identifies it will be declared the 'winner' by the original poster.
  • That winner shall either post another challenge or declare the floor open. Anyone may then post the next challenge.
  • If the winner of the challenge does not respond to the notification of their success within 48 hours, an Open house can be declared when there is consensus between multiple other posters which are on line.
  • When the poster of a challenge does not respond within 48 hours of a posted answer, this poster can be declared winner if the answer is considered correct in a consensus of multiple other posters.
  • If Open House is declared, regular posters should not jump in immediately, but time should be given for those who are not great at naming the correct location as they may have some good images.
  • There will only be one challenge running at a time.
  • Try to use elderly photos and not Google Earth, Zoom Earth or any other search engine, pics
  • Try to post images that are not already present on internet, as Google Image Search will find them if they are.
  • Personal photos are acceptable as they show the aerodrome as it is now.
  • When confirming the correct location, the location and winner should be stated to negate any deletion of posts.
  • Please don't delete your posts, let everyone see your successes, failures and challenges.
Anyone can edit it so long as they have been here for 90 days with 90 posts. Let's get consensus before changing and not go crazy Thanks to Self Loading Bear for suggesting that we use a wiki. Which Aerodrome I Which Aerodrome II nvubu.

Correct! A very interesting history it has, too. Joe Stalin used to admire his air force from there. The photo was taken in 1991 from a 125 we were demonstrating. We were following the site of the MKAD, Moscow's equivalent of the M25!

I didn't realize that Tushino had closed.

Try this. I took this picture last year.

Harry,

Not all of it is flat!

However, to be fair, this aerodrome is in a mostly flat part of the country.

A clue to its location is that there is no scheduled jet service. I was very surprised to see an Airbus on the ramp as we joined the circuit.

Why is it that in all the films/TV you see they are able to zoom in on a photo and read the words even though they are only one pixel tall in the original.

Doesn't work in the real world. I've tried with the hangar, and the name is still a blue blob Guess it says Aviation - no real help then

Sorry about that nvubu. My iPhone 6s has a very impressive camera, but it does have its limits.

However, you can make out the airline's name - does that help?

The cloud and the platform in front of the nose are related clues.

PS I just looked at my original. I don't think I'm giving anything away to say that the name on the hangar is "Esso Aviation".

Possibly Lethbridge.
Concrete apron with tarmac edges and the buildings seem to fit.

HH, I think your tongue must be firmly in your cheek again! The small city adjacent to this airport has almost the population of the IOW.

The cloud is a Cb. What comes out of them and "impacts" airworthiness?

dixi188,

Yes, it's Lethbridge CYQL. We landed there to clear customs while returning from Oshkosh. We had to overnight due to thunderstorms between there and Calgary.

The Airbus had been there since the previous day, after it had diverted from Calgary:

You have control

PS Sorry for any confusion caused by overlapping posts. There are some spectacular pictures in the Calgary Herald link.

FYI Lethbridge DOES have a scheduled service - three a day according to this

Lethbridge Airport: Lethbridge Airport

But I'd never have got it from the picture ...............

I followed others leads and started east of the Rockies around Calgary and found Lethbridge first. Just luck really.

Sorry, nothing to post at the moment. I must sort out my boxes of slides.

OH.

True, but it's a Beech 1900D, that wonderful flying testbed - "Let's stick one more excrescence on and see if it flies any better."

When the A320 arrived, they had to improvise to get the passengers off:

I've discovered that Air Canada wants to charge me $350 for a one-way 30 minute flight! I wonder what the loads are like.
