Here is a read only link to the Aerodrome Database - WhichAerodrome.xlsx. Up to date as of 1/5/2019. Catching up slowly - up to May 2019 now (Mar 2020).

Here are some "rules" for Which Aerodrome. These are based upon the original suggestions from the very first thread, and have a few additions. Also please be patient as when you are active others may be asleep.
  • A historic picture of an aerodrome will be posted. Newer pictures are allowed but the theme here is to compare/contrast old with new as well as identifying aerodromes which no longer exist.
  • The person who correctly identifies it will be declared the 'winner' by the original poster.
  • That winner shall either post another challenge or declare the floor open. Anyone may then post the next challenge.
  • If the winner of the challenge does not respond to the notification of their success within 48 hours, an Open house can be declared when there is consensus between multiple other posters which are on line.
  • When the poster of a challenge does not respond within 48 hours of a posted answer, this poster can be declared winner if the answer is considered correct in a consensus of multiple other posters.
  • If Open House is declared, regular posters should not jump in immediately, but time should be given for those who are not great at naming the correct location as they may have some good images.
  • There will only be one challenge running at a time.
  • Try to use elderly photos and not Google Earth, Zoom Earth or any other search engine, pics
  • Try to post images that are not already present on internet, as Google Image Search will find them if they are.
  • Personal photos are acceptable as they show the aerodrome as it is now.
  • When confirming the correct location, the location and winner should be stated to negate any deletion of posts.
  • Please don't delete your posts, let everyone see your successes, failures and challenges.
Anyone can edit it so long as they have been here for 90 days with 90 posts. Let's get consensus before changing and not go crazy Thanks to Self Loading Bear for suggesting that we use a wiki. Which Aerodrome I Which Aerodrome II nvubu.

If you consider the Dutch airfields targets of Bödenplatte you may notice those were large airbases with concrete runways so....

Did Bodenplatte have any target in Germany? That would be surprising! You have all the elements to find rather easily the answer to the riddle...

I believe not since it was the Luftwaffe's last fling and presumably launched from German airfields close to the Low Countries. Hence my suggestion......I hadn't seen a comment indicating that latest airfield was specifically a target!

Have re read previous posts. Asw22, you are quite correct re target, targeting etc. My suggestion is retracted forthwith!!

I have used the terms "target" and "targeted" already...This should narrow the field of search don't you think?

Excluding all the other targets, only Metz-Frescaty remains, but can't really match the photo

None of the Belgian (and Dutch for that matter) targets have a wide riverbed nearby
But looking at the picture (and the shades on the ground) again, have to exclude Metz-Frescaty as otherwise the sun would have been shining from the north...

I throw the towel into the ring ...

There are 17 airfields listed in Wikipedia as being involved on the BotB but I cannot match them on Google Earth. I'm guessing others have done this but it might save someone else wasting their day!!

Cool

It is indeed mentioned in wikipedia...did you (at large) really check all of them?

So please have a look there: 50°56'49.92"N 4°23'03.98"E

The contours of the field and various landmarks around are still perfectly identifiable...From a photo interpretation standpoint, it is an easy one!

I will show you soon another one...it will not be easy even with an approximate position...and yet when you know where it is it becomes obvious!

In the mean time, OH please...

Agreed. The peri track, the river and the road pattern are unchanged. It was 14th on my list and I was getting jaded and not knowing Belgium airfields didn't help.

I must confess that I see no similarity between what those co-ordinates produce on my map and the original photo.

Perhaps the photo is not north-up?

Smile

Actually it is NE up...but that should not be such a hindrance in this case (yet it is sometimes, true!):

Cheers!

It looks a lovely little strip but Belgium puts a fair number of obstacles to flying there that I doubt if I will ever visit.

wow, I was really mislead by the original picture. I was looking for a river in a rather wide river bed, so discarded all Belgian airfields, after having a close look on GE just to be sure. I never would have guessed it was Grimbergen (EBGB). And I've flown there, although as a passenger on the Goodyear blimp. It has 2 rather special hangars on the airfield (info in dutch: Vliegveld Grimbergen Loodsen). Some 20+ years ago it still had the original size with 3 grass runways, but environmentalists forced it to close, later opening again much smaller with one runway. The remainder of the former airfield was turned into a recreational/nature area, where the 2 old runways are still clearly visible. Some more history in dutch Recreatief Vliegveld Grimbergen - EBGB - Grimbergen Airfield (then click on 'Geschiedenis' button). The Sabena aeroclub is still based there.

Not Cyprus, but it is on an island in the Mediterranean.
