Information re Supermarine Type 546?
When I was a young apprentice at Supermarine's Experimental Hangar based at Hursley near Winchester, parked outside was an aircraft designated, as far as I remember, the 546. This aircraft had a air intake at the front much like that of the American Super Sabre (oval shaped), swept wings made from chemically etched thick skins for laminar flow. I often wonder what happened to it: does anyone have any more information about this aircraft? This was not the Swift 546!

RETDPI - yes thanks for that; certainly looks like it was the 545 not 546. I Goolged 545 but could only find a very poor photo - I wonder if there a better one somewhere? But, many thanks for the pointer...

I often wondered why the design was never pursued or tested but by this time Vickers were just starting to finalise the 544 (Scimitar) specification from the earlier 508 & 525.

A Serial Number!
A snippet which might prove useful. "Veteran & Vintage Aircraft of the World" by Leslie Hunt, published about 1964 or so, records Supermarine 545 (XA 181) as being scheduled for viewing at the Cranfield Open Day on 26 June 1965. No photos, though, and no mention of the 545 anywhere in the 1974 edition of his book.
