To get a grip on the photo, Mr Gruppy, what would you recommend we focus on: The motorbike, the valley-ball net (?) the buildings, the sandy (dune-like ?) landscape, the barrels, or the guys sitting idle in the middle of the "apron"? This could be any place then and between then and now….

Not Holme on Spalding Moor, but the right continent ie Europe.

I sugest you focus on the whole picture. The sandy dunes are not sandy. This place is inland and the dune is actually a ridge. A significant ridge.

Yes, Elsenborn aerodrome in the early 30's.
During the 2nd WW, it was the scene of fierce fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. The Elsenborn Ridge was the only sector of the American front line during the Battle of the Bulge where the Germans failed to advance.
