Well chaps.

We seem to have come to a halt.

Trolltuner has established that the aerodrome is in the US of A, not Scotland.

A clue. This place has connections with the American Civil War.

Ok I'll bite: Appomattox? (or more likely Richmond, seat of the Confederate States Government)

Would the airport in question be in New Jersey? If so I have two guesses.

McGuire AFB or NAS Lakehurst.

For now I'll go with McGuire.

My head is bleeding on this one -
Civil War - heroes !
On the Union Side ?
NW of WV!
I have googled and I have trawled all sorts.
So, Con-Pilot and Chevvron - it's up to you.
I will end with either Glendale or Weirton ?
Des

Now I've found an area called Grant as in Ulysses S., but no town let alone an airfield.

OK guys,

I'll put you out of your misery !!

This aerodrome closed in 1927. It was named after a family of Union Army heros.

evansb.

Bri.

Yes !! It looks like our posts crossed in cyberspace.

McCook Field.

In 1915, Orville Wright & fellow aeronautical pioneers Charles Kettering (inventor of the "Kettering Bug", one of the first guided missiles) and Edward Deeds had scouted out a site just north of downtown Dayton for a possible airport.
The next year, the Army decided to establish its very first aeronautical research & development base and chose the "North Field" site which had been scouted out by Orville Wright.
The resultant McCook Field was established in December 1917; named in honor of the "Fighting McCooks" of Civil War fame."

The Fighting McCooks were members of a family of Ohioans who reached prominence as officers in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Two brothers, Daniel and John McCook, and thirteen of their sons were actively involved in the army, making the family one of the most prolific in American military history. Six of the McCooks reached the rank of brigadier general or higher. Several family members were killed in action or died from their wounds. Following the war, several others reached high political offices, including governorships and diplomatic posts.

The Caterpillar Club was formed here in 1922 when a pilot jumped out of his falling plane and descended by parachute to safety.

Brian, now would you mind if Captain Windsock re submitted his picture from post 2232 ??
