Not British. Not Japanese. Aircraft was known under three, perhaps four different designations, a trade name and a nickname.

The Beech AT-10 was quite similar in looks to the mystery aircraft. The Beech has doors for the undercarriage, lacking on the mystery aircraft. Some models of the mystery aircraft had wooden fixed-pitch airscrews.
