How about the Pond Racer? "Tragically, the aircraft and veteran race pilot Rick Brickert were lost when the plane caught fire during the qualifying heats for the 1993 Reno races" would seem to be "not a success".

Sorry, not the Pond Racer, but like the Pond Racer, the mystery aircraft's forte was speed.

Sorry, not the Rutan Ares, but the two aircraft shared the same hangar a while back.

More clues: The aircraft was built in 1991. Five examples were built. Three crashed. Two are on display.

aviate1138 is correct. The Bede BD-10 was designed to be the world's first kit-built Mach 1.4 jet. You have control.
