ALAEA Fed Sec 14th Dec 2012 22:02

55.7.1 says it all.

The "needs of business" will have precedence over the others.

The words don't mean that. One of the important parts of 55.7.1 is the word "balance". There is nothing in it that says "precedence".

domo 14th Dec 2012 22:10

I just hope it's fairer than previous selection processes.
Thats my point they is no fair way to do this, changing who is going still means people are going, If the company is forced to select people they want to keep maybe they wont sack as many

then again if they are closing down the place do they care

Ngineer 14th Dec 2012 23:25

Mr FedSec, a quick question.

Is it possible to dismiss members from our union?

Just asking a simple question, not implying anything.

empire4 15th Dec 2012 00:00

Fed Sec,

Where does it say specifically "last in first off"? 55.7.4 service with the Company could be read as "well you have been around a long time so see you later"......

eshlon 15th Dec 2012 00:11

LOFO will protect some useless ass LAME's; is there a way that ALAEA and the company can weed these types of pricks out?

These guys have a habit of surviving these "changes". I'm not a LAME, so it doesn't affect me much... Except for the fact that I may be accompanying some decent LAME's to Centrelink, whilst these (3) pests remain on the fort.

duderanch 15th Dec 2012 00:26

Duderanch, either you only have a 767 or you have no idea about how to run a business. The company will NOT KEEP A 767 only guy and CR an A380 or A330 only guy. That is why they are making you REDUNDANT......the aircraft is being made REDUNDANT.

Ouch, empire 4 have a heart. They may well make me redundant. And if they do I'll be in new job in 6 months whilst your probably stressing out about redundancies again. Either way the outlook is pretty dire.
Until we see what they'll use I guess we all toss and turn at night.

Bootstrap1 15th Dec 2012 00:31

Eshlon, you are so right on the money with your comment.

I have seen some total morons survive VR/CR not because they are hard working and talented people, but because they are part of the furniture, or they know how to use the HR system to their advantage.

Once they survive they are then normally promoted out of danger to lead a project or some other bullsh1t non productive position.

Whatever way this is done it will never be fair and equitable to all parties involved. Never has been, never will be. It will be run the same way as training spots, the ALAEA can fight tooth and nail over the meaning of a word, but as they have shown in the last 12 months, it doesn't matter what is written in an EBA, to them it means nothing.

This sort of stuff should be handled by a third party organisation chosen by both parties, one that doesn't know anyone,or has nothing to gain or lose by making the decisions.

As long as management is involved, no one in the firing line will like they way it unfolds.

1me 15th Dec 2012 01:46

I agree with the sentiments that this process will not be "fair" to all those in the firing line. We can all probably formulate examples of inequity with regards to training and other advancement opportunities. You can't lay blame on someone who hasn't been trained on a new type. Some guys get overlooked through no fault of their own. I guess that is simply the nature of the beast. Good engineers, both LAME and AME will lose out and everyone will be impacted to some degree either directly or not. And if we survive this round.. then there is always the next round..

Silverado 15th Dec 2012 02:17

LOFO will protect some useless ass LAME's; is there a way that ALAEA and the company can weed these types of pricks out?
The company has allowed useless engineers to stay for decades, why should they be able to weed them out now?

Also, we have a joke of a performance review mechanism, that does us no favours.

Silverado 15th Dec 2012 02:41

You can't possibly think that treating a 767 licence, soon to be obsolete is the same as a full B1.1 guy with a A380?
How about you forget about the licence and think about the person.

The only people who will want "last in first off" are the old timers, hoping they will not be low on the list. I bet the attitude changes when the 200+ go and its time for round 2.
The real truth is, the only people who don't want LOFO are the ones who WILL be on the list. Seniority is the fairest, in a unfair situation.

VR and no CR is the only real fair way!

Where does it say specifically "last in first off"? 55.7.4 service with the Company could be read as "well you have been around a long time so see you later"......
It doesn't, so why ask?

empire4 15th Dec 2012 13:19

"How about you forget about the licence and think about the person." - That makes for really smart business. Maybe you should be in government.

There will never be any totally fair way to to shaft people, and I'm sad they are doing it. All because of incompetent management. A lot of people get comfortable, and want the company to hand everything out. Soon a lot will be welcomed to the real world with open arms and I guarantee they will look back where they were and wish they hadn't whinged so much.

Ngineer 15th Dec 2012 23:05

Maybe we can be a bit more constructive on this thread and start posting job opportunities available out there (in Sydney and other locations where redundancies are taking place). It may take some stress out of the situation, and possibly enable us all to reconsider our prospects within this dwindling industry.

Any takers??

Thats what SEEK is for

Is it possible to dismiss members from our union?
Yes it is. 5 life bans handed out in 2008 to managers who were carrying out questonable maintenance whilst we undertook pia.

Where does it say specifically "last in first off"? 55.7.4 service with the Company could be read as "well you have been around a long time so see you later"......
True it is not those words exactly (LOFO). It says that service with the company will be taken into account. The effect of the words is LOFO. It was what the framers of the words (Qantas and ALAEA, including myself) meant when they were included. It would be a nonsense to try and interperet them the other way around and would not stand in law. Sorta like a criminal who has his good behaviour taken into account, it may not say it but is always a positive thing.

LOFO will protect some useless ass LAME's; is there a way that ALAEA and the company can weed these types of pricks out?
Yes. I heard you were useless. You can go instead of one of my mates. Company are good at picking quality employees to. Just look at the managers.

This sort of stuff should be handled by a third party organisation chosen by both parties, one that doesn't know anyone,or has nothing to gain or lose by making the decisions.
Company would never agree on somebody completely fresh coming in. I'd also be concerned that they didn't know what they were doing.

There will never be any totally fair way to to shaft people, and I'm sad they are doing it. All because of incompetent management.
If they start tapping people there will be a group who say the process was unfair and another saying it was ok. This will not be easy.

Crisis phone hookup today between Nass and has managers. Apparently maintenance is building up fast and planes are not getting out. The more it builds, the less people they can make redundant. Your future is in your hands guys. Please report any bastard who is bending the rules to make it work on 500s and 2000s and get them to the alaea.

Exactly,
Did i mention the several transfers available to BNE LMO.
b1 and b2 required.

Some here seem to assume that the ALAEA and Qantas are great mates and have meetings over tea and cakes .
Time to take a pill and step back into the real world Qantas want everyone gone and could not careless what the ALAEA or the workforce want .

That's one Ppruner who fully understands the situation.

There is only one way to make Qantas take notice of what you want.
