MERGED: Alan's still not happy......
With the announced increase in flights to the Americas, were will the Aircraft to operate these service come from?
As they have no additional aircraft on order, even with a better utilisation,i would think some route or routes will be cut?

Possibilities in order of likelihood :
1. Either Japan goes to Jetstar or the 330. There has been no mention of either.
2. South Africa goes away forever.
3. One or two fewer 747s are scrapped

QANTAS has hit back at Jetstar speculation
Note how all this speculation is leaking out everywhere but NSW so far...
Even Hickey has emerged (back from the dead?) to come up with a couple of classic lines..
Selective statement, and this gem below
Way to go Simon, hard to run an airline without them... genius, that's why he's the CEO... or should I say one of them...

Qantas International CEO Simon Hickey said the airline was the lead carrier for Australians travelling across the Pacific.

Extra Americas
I believe the schedule change has essentially freed up an extra 744 airframe to allow for the 4x additional American services. The aircraft have less ground time in both SYD and LAX. I understand the Joburg flight turns straight around and goes to LA now, for example.
At present 2x 744s are required to operate SYD-NRT due to both flights being night operations. I believe the service can be operated with one 744 if the schedule moves to a day flight up, and night flight back op as per the rest of the Asian services and as per JAL's flights.
The above accounts for two 744 airframes, one for increased services and another for retirement.
Someone else may be able to chime in with better gin...

The four extra services a week to the Americas accounts for about 5400 hours per year which is just over one airframe. Personally I don't see one of the Narita services going to daylight as the business people prefer the night sector. The big problem with increased utilisation of the 380 and 747 to 14/14.5 hours a day is two fold. Firstly the 747 has provided the backup to the 380 when it breaks down secondly to get this sort of daily utilisation reliably you need massive engineering and spare parts support. Qantas has neither. I predict that this will end in tears for Qantas with delays everywhere that will flow thru for days, unless they decide to keep an additional 747 or two.
Nunc est bibendum
Dragon man is on the money re aircraft utilisation. With the schedules so tight there is little space for schedule recovery. With the (old) 744s flying linger hours they're going to need extra TLC which I hope Qantas has the capacity to provide though I suspect they don't.

At a cost of between $100,000 and $400,000 a month (depending on whose figures you use) it would be a big discount. They will probably use the missus' style of accounting, claiming they are now saving $400,000 a month per aircraft. At this rate jetstar will be roaring back into profit.
I think we also need to review the name of this thread. It should be called 'Allan's still not exposing himself.... ' or something like that. Talk about disappearing for months on end. Is he still CEO?
P.s. How many idle planes in japan?

Flew into Brissy the other morning, on my right, on remote bays, I counted 5 J A320s.
Left that night four still there and several around the operating gates.

There has been a lot written in this thread but in the end it comes down to two simple facts
1. The shareholders are obviously satisfied with the Chairperson and the Board.
2. The Chairperson and the Board are obviously satisfied with the CEO and his management group.
While we like to think Qantas is iconic, the general public clearly don't agree. So forget the thought of help from this sector to save the company. I won't waste time on the political option.
Qantas is in a terminal decline. Get what you can, because if you wait to the end, it might be 10 cents in the dollar!
If you own shares in QF and disagree with the majority shareholder position, do as I did; sell you shares.
If you work for Qantas and disagree with the Chairman and the Board's position, do as I did; move on.
Life outside QF is very good and believe it or not, pilots who do not work for Qantas can actually fly so don't be scared of having to fly with turkeys. The only turkeys around are the investor shareholders.
Finally, don't think you have to stop whinging if you follow my lead. Whinging is a pilot's god given right.
Think of numero uno. That is what the Chairman and AJ do.

So what was the end result with this aircraft? Quite a financial burden.

Fair enough, that may be after write downs etc,
However lets hope Thursdays announcement shows only a 200 or 300 million dollar loss before write downs.
They did have a few big years which was nice but I would be interested in how many write downs where included in those years.
After Thursday we can put the last say five years together and see if the company broke even over the five year block.
As an investor that's what I would be looking at.
