Virgin Migration

As Qantas downsizes and reduces costs another airline is growing and repositioning itself.Qantas is losing knowledge and expertise rapidly.
John Borghetti has acquired a lot of valuable Qantas employees. Both executives and frontline/admin staff. These people were stifled at Qantas and are being given free reign. The results are obvious.Borghetti approached Qantas about a list of names of those who were leaving.Privacy reasons were cited and the request denied.Nevertheless he is assembling quite a team. The pay is a little lower but the empowerment and respect being bestowed is certainly motivating
A few Godfreyites have left. That was to be expected.Career progression has taken off.All in all a great aviation place to be

The trouble with Qantas is that by definition the wrong people will be leaving.

Those with marketable skills will jump ship first. The unemployable clods and those with the political backstabbing skills will stay.

When we ran a VR program at Ansett in the late Seventies, one of its rules was that the company had the right to refuse an application for VR, because we didn't want to lose the good guys.

....The mistake we did make was failing to manufacture a big rubber stamp with "Not to be re-employed" on it. Ron Jackson almost had a heart attack when he discovered a year later that some guys he thought he had happily seen the back of had moved to Queensland and been rehired by Ansett - kept the VR money and with continuity of benefits as well!

There are two angles covered quite nicely in the original post;

1. QANTAS is quite obviously trying to reduce the cost of its work force, fighting the unions is hard. Its easy to make some of your employees feel unloved and they leave until you have those that dont mind lower pay and conditions. This is easier to do than fight over agreements etc...

2. VA is expanding and offering opportunity but on lower conditions but higher freedom to operate or progress and a perceived higher respect for staff. (JQ is similar but on a lower scale again).

In the end what makes you happy is the most important thing to consider. Whether all these people make a difference in the long term is to be seen, VA is kicking all the goals at the moment if that is to be any guide.

Rubbish. Those that jump ship do, by definition, have marketable skills. Those that stay are not ALL the backstabbers. I still have immense pride in working for QANTAS, just not the current group of bottomfeeders who are running the place. I am staying and if it all comes to an end for me then I will pursue opportunities in other industries. I find your assertion offensive.

From what I hear things are not going to well with the pilot's EBA negotiations.

I'm sorry you are offended, but your attitude represents a triumph of hope over experience.

Your "immense pride" in working for Qantas is your Achilles heel:

1. The very first tactic Qantas engages in is always to appeal to employees ego by references to "Professionalism", "fairness" and "decency". The old ALAEA leaders not only fell for this approach every time, but regurgitated it to its members.

The Pilots unions are still falling for it, in my opinion, because the Ego personality component necessary to be a successful pilot leaves them very vulnerable to such entreaties.

2. The reality demonstrated time and again over the last Ten years is that Qantas treats its employees with utter and complete contempt, as some Twelve hundred engineers are likely to find out this week. Qantas has no shame. They will work you into the ground and then curse you for having nothing left to give.

Your "immense pride" is unfortunately misplaced, unless of course you are a manager far enough up the organisation to be able to write your own first class tickets.

I agree with all of that.

Again, I agree.

Nope, I'm a line pilot which was exactly what I wanted to be. Flying is a huge part of my life and I hope it stays that way but, given that I do not want to move my family OS at this stage of life, the reality is that flying may not always be part of my life so I am therefore dealing with that. I have other strings to my bow (albiet a bit dusty and not pulled for a while) so that's fortunate for me I guess.

A visit to the Qantas Museum in Longreach would explain exactly where my pride comes from better than I could explain it.

Anyway, a bit of thread drift I guess so that'll do.
