Merged: PelAir jobs gone....
I thought they might get busy with the Convairs losing their Toll freight contract. Or is that rumour incorrect.

Unfortunately truth. They're starting to be parked up against the fence in Wagga. Good Luck boys and girls!

Swings and roundabouts at the moment.
It seems night freight has gone "south"! Can the Osbourne mine charter provide enough work for all the remaining Pelair crews? Sadly, probably not.
Just how many jobs have gone, it's difficult to say. The Chairman regularily points to loses, and subsequent job cuts over at Pelair in an effort to put the wind up the REX pilots, but how many have in fact gone? I'm not sure what if any seniority protection the Pelair pilots have under their "Agreement".
Any Pelair pilots care to comment?

job losses
Apparently, the 28th of next month is D-Day. One or two metro's heading to Darwin for parts & spares, 2 remaining in Adelaide, 2 kept for charter and the rest to Wagga to be stored.
Saab's have be crewed to date with the last few going through ground school now. Will be a few out there looking for whatever work they can get before too long.

Sad to hear a lot of good people there, hopefully they will find other gigs. Sadly the only real 'winner' in the current airfreight downturn is the Airvan operator in Bathurst! I guess some of the freight is still essential and it's a lot cheaper in a single than a PA31 or larger if the rest of the loads aren't there.
I guess a lot of the 'improvements' in the Pacific and Hume Highways means that 'overnight' freight can now be thrown on B-doubles and transported between the capitals overnight on trucks rather than on aircraft these days. Sadly the carnage on the road continues unabated as a result.

Didn't Pelair recently put on several Ex Macair pilots. Don't get me wrong, I don't want anyone to lose their job, but will the cuts come from senority, what fleet you happen to be on, or whether or not your position is in the best interests of the company?
Genuine question.

According to an article in Business Week, Virgin are starting a freight run six nights per week from tomorrow carrying Toll freight between Melbourne and Darwin. The Westwinds are being retired after 30 years of service, so I guess, unless they can find some charter work, they wont need crews. Understand from a source in Darwin that helicopters are using the hangar and Air Rescue are based in the terminal attached to the hangar. End of an era, those Westwinds must have 40,000 plus hours.
Whispering "T" Jet

Lots of jobs going south in the airfreight industry I am sad to say and there will be more.
Sign of the times, business watching the pennies and less demand for air freight.
Ansett Air Freight were very good at sending airfreight via road in the late 80's, and got caught out by a TV crew.
Pelairs Metro3's must be about ready for scrap by now?

Yes the westwinds have some high hours but still going as strong as ever. How many drivers around the world cut their first jet hours on this beast?? What other non military jet still does 1:1 drops??
We saw the westwind depart Darwin on the last freight run last week with the usual impresive Pelair farewell. The grapevine says its all go on the international and domestic medivac flights and all crew are to stay. Good times in bad times?

The answer is - not very many. The Brisbane base is losing a lot of pilots (me included) as in about a month from now we'll have just one Metro 23 for medivac & charter and one Saab for freight. That's a reduction from something like eight Metros from a year ago.
I don't have a job to go to, I'm not really sure what I'm going to do to make a living. It's looking like it's the end of my 26 year aviation career.

I wonder who owned a road freight company then?

crewing
Krusty..
Indeed, a few Mac C&T captains are now flying out of TSV. There doesn't seem to be logic with regards to who is staying and who is going though. There are a few newbies who hadn't been checked to line on the metro and are now on the saab ground school, whilst more senior FO's are looking at a less desirable position.. (coles, woolies???) The Westwinds are no longer doing the red centre run and will rely on mainly medivac operations.

Thanks senshi.
Christ 18-Wheeler. Your comments not only break my heart, but make me extremely angry as well. After years of operation, are you guys telling me that some sort of seniority clause in the Pelair industrial contract has never applied! What the hell were you all thinking?
Now, 18-Wheeler may not want to transfer to the SAAB or some other base, but after years of loyal service, he should at least have the right!!

Don't get too upset guys - A heap of positions had to go, so someone has to lose their job. In this case I'm one of them.
*shrug*
I'm working on other projects to make me dosh, I've done enough in aviation anyway so maybe it's time to move on to other lines of work.
By coincidence, I'm literally on the very last page of logbook #3, so it's a sign I tells ya!
