Not sure about the pod scrape but VH-OJA blew a tyre out of FRA and the bits were thrown through the flaps. Aircraft on deck now in Sin and will be fo days. From the accounts I have heard the crew were made aware after takeoff about the potential damage and someone, somehow, somewhere made a decision to keep her in the air for the full sector. It may have been the outgoing Manager of Maint Watch attempting a last ditch effort to save his job. The "she'll be right mate just bring her home" phone/satcom advice seems to have slipped in as a norm these days.

The grin? Funny?

Not so much funny but rather a shadenfreude moment.

As a full time and long serving employee consider it a result of being treated like the enemy by QF management for the last 10 years.

_____________

It was suggested that a pod strike on the same aircraft occurred, landing into SIN.

I can sure understand the attitude towards yer management, but I think I miss the point of a pod strike being a "fun" way to get back at them....

Maybe it's just me. Perhaps I'll have a laugh with you tomorrow...I'll let you know.

Fordran,

Without knowing the facts, blowing a tyre is not necessarily a case for a fuel dump and return. I am sure the crew evaluated the need for a return vs. continue and came up with the best option. Advise from maintenance watch is simply that....advise. The PIC makes the decision based on all the information presented to him/her at the time. Have a little faith in the fact that it was the CREW that decided to continue and that they are professionals and decided on the appropriate course of action.

Advise which advice they should be taking? And advise us all how QF crews use this advice...and finally, who in QF HR hired you and under what advice when you can't even spell the word!!

Thumbs down

OH please... the crew were most probably told that there was debris on the runway and "probably" had no indications other than a "0" reading on a tyre press indication. So... what you would dump 1oo odd tons of fuel to return to the departure point without any other reason! Oh yeh you are a great thinker...

Also don't assume all the damage occurred during T/O, it's possible there was no damage until landing with flap 25/30 vs 10/20 for T/O.

Perhaps also consider the option of a MLW return with subsequent higher speed, etc and then the option of a significantly reduced landing weight in SIN.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure we've done this one to death previously.

A technical question

Are the QF B744s equipped with a BTM/TPI (Brake Temperature Monitoring/Tire Pressure Indicating system?
If so, then easy for the flt crew to make an informed decision as to which tyre was stuffed.

Oh, for the purists - "Tire" is the way Mr Boeing spells "tyre" in his systems' descriptions.

Yeah you are correct the 744 has a synoptic to view the pressure and temp. And if you did blow a tyre why the hell would you dump and return? Too many lounge chair flyers here these days hehe.

Qf does have TPM on it 400s but only the older RR powered aircraft. The ugly sisters and ERs are not equipped as such. This is what happens when you let bean counters make technical decisions.

I seem to remember a certain French airplane, whose name starts with a C, blowing a tyre on t/o a few years ago.

That wasn't exactly a "non event."
