So tell me Hugh,

Are they looking for F/O's, or are they now searching for DEC's?

Genuine question.

Gidday Krusty,

I didn't ask (I was handing all my gear back at the time). Judging by the number of candidates being interviewed I'd imagine there would be some commands among them.

DEC's will come, but within certain guidelines.

Be nice to compare it to NJ or Easterns or SA or Skip Skips.

I hear MD is desperately looking for both DEC's and FO's. They are apparently over there for 10 days or so. Desperate times call for desperate measures!!!

I didn't think the 457 visa's were approved, that being the case how are they going to bring them over?

I will be surprsed if QFlink will attract many Sarth Efrikens. The "Manager" insists on keeping the pay, lifestyle and respect level slightly lower than that required to retain anybody with experience.

After returning from the promised land of low-pay pilots they may finally admit defeat, offering a decent pay rise and lifestyle balance.

(just joking)

Much as another Dash 8 operator found after they checked out the same option - a long time ago incidentally. They now pay very good money and have a long queue of experienced guys and girls out the door and down the street.

How could that be? Isn't there an unprecedented pilot shortage? Aren't pilots being poached? Didn't we (qflink) do everything in our power to retain pilots?
Everything in our current obscene profit business/plan/model that is...

It may be time to get their snouts out of the bonus trough and have some humble pie.

Word is the Qlink company bully left today for South Africa to interview 40 odd applicants. Don't know if there are any DEC's in the mix.

Heard this one "on the vine".

It has now come to pass that QFlink have all but exhausted their upgradeable F/O's for command. No real surprises there, and very shortly REX will follow. The problems with the 457 visa's are varied, and far from being a smooth excercise in itself, several factors will probably frustrate the process. With the expansion of the major airlines still in full swing, and set to be so for some time, competition for pilots who qualify for DEC will be strong, and QFlink are not at the top of the food chain.

My sources have told me that QFlink management would rather attract local pilots and in the process save a whole sh!tload of time and money. So where to get them?

Some of you may or may not be aware of the wage disparity between QFlink pilots and REX pilots. A 10 year REX Captain's base salary is almost the same as a year 1 QFlink Captain. Any REX Captain jumping ship to QFlink will at the very least maintain parody, and any Junior Captain will see a significant payrise to start! In 18 months time QFlink has offered to pay their serving Captains a bonus of $45K if they hang around. REX has offered nothing. It appears that QFlink management have also seen the folly of the past, and are now incorporating the Q400 into the Eastern and possibly Southern fleets. Sources say that over 30 aircraft are on the way!

REX would have you believe that it's attrition of pilots is driven purely by the desire to go fly a jet. We all know that's only part of the story. I have spoken to many serving and senior REX captains, and virtually all of them have indicated they would move to QFlink if given the opportunity! Such is the sense of hopelessness that now prevails.

This is becoming a battle for survival. Who survives to become the largest regional operator in the country, and who is forced by CASA to close the doors when the last of their Check and Trainers depart, will probably unfold in the year to come!

Rather ominous last paragraph Krusty.. ..

KRUSTY

Are you saying that they have applied and not been given the nod by QFLink? Or too simplistic?

for South Africa to interview 40 odd applicants
The first 3 South Africans that did their Interviews and Sim Checks in Sydney have all received offers within the last 5 Days.

They have also unanimously Rejected these offers...

What's needed here is a bandaid. If things get any tighter Qlink could always contract a F100 on another route.

The jet may have some pax appeal - to risk letting good routes go seems like shooting oneself in ones foot.

Krusty,
Big fan of your well-crafted and balanced contributions to this forum. Particularly liked the (intentional?) spelling error in your recent post stating that Rex skippers moving to QLink would maintain "parody" regarding wages and conditions. Gold.

Cloud Whisperer,

None have applied that I'm aware of. Many however have indicated that they would apply for DEC when QFlink announce them!

exmexican,

Thanks for that mate, but I have to admit it was actually a genuine spelling error.

So Q4nvs did the springboks not like the pay/conditions or the infamous eastern management/check&failers. Are they to go on contracts or the EBAS? gg.
