Considering that the A380 is likely to be flown by Jetstar pilots under a deal currently being worked by Oldmeadow ect then I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss 'five stripers'.
A320 capt earns $104K - less than a QF long haul CSM.

First endorsement you pay for will be the 717 then the A320, you could be based anywhere and be moved at the whim of management, probably start in Hobart…
Pay and conditions are simply outstanding…

The Matrix,
Your data on the pay scale is inaccurate.
Jetstar Captain (A320 or B717) Annual Base Salary is $AUS 122,000 plus allowances/overtime.
This will increase to $AUS 129,000 Base salary plus allowances/overtime in early May 2005.
New negotiated EBA (Enterprise Bargaining Agreement) due in late May 2005.
EBA negotiations will start from a base salary of $AUS 129,000.
Current bases are Sydney (A320/B717), Melbourne (A320/B717), Hobart (B717), SEQ-(South East Queensland-Brisbane/Coolangatta) (B717) and Newcastle (B717).
SEQ is a combined base of Brisbane and Coolangatta whereby pilots based there are rostered to fly out of both bases. Currently only the B717 is based there.
6 weeks annual leave plus associated sick/carers/parents leave.
Minimum 8 rostered days off per month.
Long service leave.
Seniority based system for promotions, leave, etc etc.
Superannuation.
Loss of License Insurance.
Qantas Staff Travel Benefits.
Just the facts as researched through various mediums.

Dont think Id be putting my money on NJS just yet. Endorsing that many pilots for starters would be a prohibitive cost. Having said that it would be good to see these guys get a go.
Unlike "OTHER" groups under the QF umbrella they have got on with their work. Instead of whinning about the fortunes of others. Id be happy to fly with an NJS person anyday.
Best of luck DM

If Jetstar get the gig, they will need pilots from somewhere to crew these aircraft.
Surely the NJS guys and girls would be in with a very good chance of a position anyway?
If so, with most of the NJS pilots in WA starting with NJS over 10 years ago - and have not yet taken Long Service Leave, the payouts from NJS would be massive. (would pay for their ratings I suppose)

In view of past events at AN it might be timely for the NJS people to look over the nearest beancounters shoulder and try to see some evidence that the accruals are in the till.
Can't be too careful these days.

Mr Canal.
You have my humblest apologies.
The Jetstar commanders package is excellent - obviously a well negotiated thoughtful and worthy piece of remuneration.
Out of interest, who is negotiating your next EBA - AIPA, AFAP, IPC or direct to Oldmeadow.
All the best for yor future - youv'e earned it.!!

Yeh chimbu, as a matter of fact I do wanna bet.
DM, what is the more prohibitive cost, endorsing 80 odd pilots ( most of which would be done in line flying, apart from sim ) or biulding a multi million dollar maintenance facility in Perth, or ferrying A/c to the east coast every time they need more than a windscreen wash or tyre change. ( not having a go, an honest question )
Also, how do jetstar expand into 20 A320s over the next couple of years without hiccups from having to set another operation on the other side of the country?
NJS have everything in place, it is essentially just a type change.
Having said all that of course, practicality and/or logic will probably have no part in the decision.
we will only have to ponder and pontificate for another 2-3 weeks max., I would say.

Either way, they will still be endorsing pilots.
Wont the existing 717 pilots eventually go onto the A320?
So training does not really come into it, it will have to be done anyway. If Jetstar get the contract, they 'might' charge for the ratings, if NJS get the contract pilots will not have to pay for the rating.

I have just seen a vacancy notice for B717 based in MLB, NTL, HBT…
Commencement date FEB MAR 2005
I have some questions,
1. Are vacancies posted internally first so as existing staff get first choice of basing/promotions?
2. Are vacancies awarded in seniority order?
3. Do you only have to pay for the first endorsement?
4. How does one get a copy of the current agreement?
5. Is the professional retention bonus paid each year and how much is it?
6. Where do the direct entry Captains fit, are they on the seniority list?
7. What proportion of future commands have been promised to Qantas mainline?
8. With the phasing out of the 717 (subject to who gets the contract to operate them for Qantaslink) what will be the order of Base closures.
Just interested…..

Spinout
Also interested to see where QF regional pilots fit in and why the need for regional pilots to undergo a four stage recruitment process ( inc. psych. tests) into Jetstar. Were the current pilots required to do this?
Whilst other groups and contractors within QF get bigger and better equipment, Eastern and Sunstate have to be content with current fleet for the forseeable future. Dash 400's i believe have been hit on the head to better let Jetstar compete and exist.
With a 15 -20% pilot turnover and lack of care by management its wonder that life as a regional pilot is no longer a sought after longtime position.

Where do the QF regional pilots fit in?
In the front of a Dash 8, a nice job, with permanent employment, seniority provisions, staff travel, full union representation, living in bases that don't look like closing in the near future, that's where!
Where else WOULD they fit in, vigi-one?
Wanna know what QF thinks of 'regional' pilots...??go talk to a former Southern's 146 pilot!
