Death of John Barnao
From last Friday's Daily Telegraph:
ONE of Sydney's best known helicopter pilots has died of a serious illness at age 58.
John Barneo spent his career carrying photographers and TV camera operators to some of the biggest news stories in the past 30 years.
His wife Margaret told The Daily Telegraph yesterday he fell in love with helicopters in the early 70s when he began working for Channel 9.
``He knew where to put the helicopter so that they could get the best pictures,'' she said.
``Anything he went into he did with passion.'' Barneo is remembered by his wife Margaret, son Peter, daughters Kerrie-Ann and Maria and four grandchildren.

My information is that John died in the Adventist hospital last Wednesday.

Very sad to hear of John's death. I only flew one camera sortie with him, but he was so atuned to the requirements of the cameraman he made the whole job much, much easier and the results were visible in the quality of the footage. He knew where the best angle was for the position of the sun, knew where the best backgrounds for buildings etc were and had his helo plumbed for power for camera so we never had to worry about batteries etc.
A fine gentleman and a genuine pleasure to work with. May he rest in peace and sincerest condolenes to his family and friends. He will be missed.

I knew John Barnao. Flew with him on a few photographic missions. His happy demeanour combined with his professional skill will always be remembered by me and used as a fine example to follow. RIP John.

Never knew John personally - my condolensces to his family.
I did however go to Sydney Technical College with his son Peter.
Wonder whether he continued the family tradition as a helicopter pilot?

Thanks, John, for your invaluable assistance and advice, rendered free of charge and without any expectation of reward, just for being a mate, whenever I needed help with anything to do with angry palm trees. I relished visiting you at Mascot, going over the models and the photos, talking about whatever was on the agenda at the time, and always came away knowing more than when I started. You will always be one of the industry's best to me. Rest in peace.
