The plane is missing near the Wangaratta region and has six people on board.
Ben Mitchell from Australian Search and Rescue (AusSAR) says there are concerns.
"We're coordinating a search for a twin-engine aircraft that was last reported 33 kilometres south-east of Wangaratta," he said.
"That aircraft is no longer on radar and not responding to radio calls.
"[It] failed to arrive as intended at the Benalla aerodrome and is flying in extremely poor weather."

A SMALL twin-engine aircraft carrying six passengers is feared to have crashed between in poor conditions in New South Wales this morning.
The plane failed at Benalla in north-east Victoria at its scheduled arrival time of 11am (AEST). Australian Search and Rescue spokesman Ben Mitchell said the last radio contact with the plane, flying from Bankstown in Sydney to Benalla, was at 11am (AEST) today.
"We have extreme concerns about the six people on board the plane," he said.
"The plane was flying in extremely poor weather and very low clouds."
He said four search and rescue helicopters from Canberra, Wagga Wagga, Bendigo and Melbourne had been called in to search the last known location of the plane, 33km south-east of Wangaratta.
He said low cloud was expected to make the search difficult.

Hope so too. The Age reports the flight being ex-BK. I remember a local PAY3 this morning departing for YBLA. Don't want to put the callsign here in case I'm on the wrong track entirely.

Although bloody no idea journos at it again. Plane BK-BNA..and last heard of SE of WGT..hardly in NSW!

Dunno if the warbies would be to blame. There is a lot of tiger country from Corryong across to Myrtleford. Things not looking good for a happy ending :-( Not a good place to be in winter.

Authorities have "extreme concerns" for the six passengers on board the small twin-engine Piper Cheyenne after it failed to land at Benalla.
The plane’s last known position was 33km south-east of Wangaratta.
Australian Search and Rescue spokesman Ben Mitchell said the last radio contact with the plane, flying from Bankstown in Sydney to Benalla, was at 11am (AEST).
"The last radio contact was that the plane was preparing to land at Benalla," Mr Mitchell said on 2GB radio.
"The plane was flying in extremely poor weather and very low clouds.
"The pilot indicated he was going to land at Benalla and he failed to do that.
"There’s dense cloud down to 180m that’s preventing some (search-and-rescue) helicopters from operating."
He said four search-and-rescue helicopters from Canberra, Wagga Wagga, Bendigo and Melbourne had been called in to search the last known location.

duff man, i don't think you're on the wrong track, that particular aeroplane had 6 pob this morning and goes to ybna regularly......pilot very experienced and nice guy too

Man, I have heard that plane go into Benalla for as long as I can remember, I even heard it up north the other day and it evoked a few memories, now its gone!
Does anyone know who the pilot may have been? There was a gentlemen who flew that plane regularly years ago but I don't know if he flew it lately.

Air search called off for missing plane
The air search for a light plane with six people aboard, which failed to arrive at its destination in Victoria's north-east, has been called off for the day.
Air Services Australia's Richard Dudley says the plane has not landed at any neighbouring airstrips and could not possibly still be flying.
"We have serious concern for the safety of the aircraft and those on board because we are now well outside the aircrafts ability to fly, knowing the amount of fuel it was carrying."
There has been no signal detected from an emergency beacon which would have been on board.
The ground search is continuing.
Piper Cheyenne was on a flight from Bankstown in Sydney to Benalla in the Wangaratta region.
It was due to land at about 11.30 am AEST.
Benalla Aerodrome says it received the pilots call to land but the plane vanished from the radar moments later.

"The low cloud really is making it virtually impossible to get aircraft into the area and it's very difficult to get in there by foot or other means, it's literally tiger country," he said.

"AusSAR is appealing for anyone in the Wangaratta, Benalla, Myrtleford region who may have seen or heard a white twin-engined plane flying low in the region this morning to contact Australian Search and Rescue on 1-800-815257."
Grant Lewis, who lives near the Benalla airport, says he heard the plane fly over his property at about 11 am AEST.
"He went over here, I'm quite sure of that, and I've established that," he said.
"My wife wasn't sure which way he was travelling...she didn't take a lot of notice of it, except there was so much pea soup you couldn't see the plane of course.
"It's been that way all day down here."

THE wreckage of an aircraft has been found in rough terrain near Benalla in north-eastern Victoria, an Australian Search and Rescue spokesman said.
The wreckage was found 30km east-south-east of Benalla, and a helicopter was attempting to land at the crash site, the spokesman said.

PAY3 is the designator for Cheyenne III, three in the country, 2 based in Roma Qld, and one at Moorabbin Vic.
VH- TNP was a Cheyenne II which according to the flight planning data is PAY2.
