Help with a distance time question
Can anyone tell me whether I'm right or wrong with this question?
2 aircraft are heading in the same direction the cruising speed of aircraft 1 is 460 knts the distance between aircraft is 35 nm the 2nd aircraft passes after 21 minutes what is the speed of the 2nd aircraft? My solution is the difference in speed of the aircraft (v) = d/t So v = 35 / 21 minutes 21 minutes is 7 20ths of an hour so v = 35 / (7/20) or 35 x (20/7) so v = 100knts If aircraft 1 is doing 460knts and is passed by aircraft 2 and there is a speed difference of 100 knts then the speed of aircraft 2 must be 560knts The answer given is 360knts. Ie they say aircraft 2 is 100 knots slower How can this be if aircraft 2 passes aircraft 1 and they are heading in the same direction? |
SMOKIN'!!!
An Oceanic controller if ever there was one. You're hired! :E |
Hope I can get one day in May as well, I can not wait to do stage 2!!!
Thanks! |

Hahaha ;) I would if I could!! I still have the email that has the link to schedule an interview, but since I received it, there have never been any more dates shown to select! I just had a quick check now and nothing shows still. I think I will email them and just check to see if there are any available dates still in case I didn't receive them.... The email you got about having just one date to select sounds an awful lot like the one I received! I wonder if we were together at stage 2? Were there about 10 people in your group that day, just one girl and the rest boys? And we had that guy who's currently training now talking to us over lunch about the training programme etc? |
The answer given is 360knts. Ie they say aircraft 2 is 100 knots slower How can this be if aircraft 2 passes aircraft 1 and they are heading in the same direction? Aircraft 2 passes over same checkpoint 21 min later. You dont have to add/substract anything. 100 knots is the AC-2 speed. |
Cheers for the input shadow. Sorry the question is meant to say that aircraft 2 passes aircraft 1 after 21 minutes (no checkpoint)

the cruising speed of aircraft 1 is 460 knts the distance between aircraft is 35 nm the 2nd aircraft passes after 21 minutes what is the speed of the 2nd aircraft? So you're looking at (35/21)*60 for your nm/h = 100 so then it's simply 100 + 460 = AC=2 with Cruise Speed of 560. The only way the "given answer" of 360 can be correct, is if the question does not say "the 2nd aircraft passes after 21 minutes" but instead "the 2nd aircraft is passed after 21 minutes". Phil |
Is anybody on here on the aerodrome course 227 starting 4th april 2011?
|
I have my stage 3 coming up and I've noticed the majority of people on here who seem to be getting through are rather young. I'm in my early 30's. Is this a disadvantage as I'm assuming nats want value for money when expenditure on training is so high.

SALH: I don't think so, I was spoke to at lunch by a gentleman called Gary who was the Watch Manager at Swanwick.

Hi I am 38 years old married with a house and a young son. I am thinking of applying yo NATS myslf for a change of career (MoD contracts are not as good as they used to be) and to support my family. I have been in aviation for the last 15 years which gives me some experience but I am also worried that 20 plus years of emplyment still in me will not be enough. Good luck to you and hope you pass.

Hi,
Does anybody know what the pass mark for the initial online check test is? I just completed it and feel as though I "balls'd" it up. Will I still be invited to assessment if I have? FS. |
@Electric-chick
Hello, I read your post earlier, the best of luck to you no matter what decision you make! @Felix As far as I know, nobody has failed the inital online test. |
CV,
Many thanks, hopefully I won't be the first! FS. |
Hi guys,
Complete newb here. Just completed the initial online application form for NATS now waiting to hear back to see if i get invited to stage 1. By no stretch of the imagination am i an aviation anorak so lots of reading, studying and brain training to do but hopefully all goes well. First point of action read through this whole thread!! |
Don't start from the beginning though, the training process was remade a few years ago so the first hundred-odd pages of posts are not very relevant anymore (yep I've read them all :p).
I'm not sure where they remade the process but if you start by reading the last 100 pages of the thread you're probably off to a good start :ok: |
can someone who's recently done Stage 2 confirm whether you have to do cubes again?
here's hoping it's a no.... :E |

sambatc: You'll be relieved to know that the cubes do not feature after Stage 1. You will be put through a series of interesting computer-based tests though, make sure your brain is on top form, because they do need serious multi-tasking skills..!

kirtjE - thank you, thank you thank you... :D :ok:
