Do you know how far in until you find out your unit placement? I'm assuming most stay on where they complete unit training?

Sorry for all the questions btw, and thanks in advance.

You complete your college training. At the end of this, you receive your posting. Once you begin at your posting/unit this is where you will train and validate your license, and thus your place of work as an ATCO.

Hi new here,
NATS UK is wanting work visa before applying. But the rules say that you either
1. need a job offer in hand to apply for a work visa
2.a sponsorship from your company who is recruiting you
In both the cases NATS UK is not going to take the responsibility.I have asked them but they said you need to have a work permit before applying.
I would request all of you here,my respected seniors or my loved juniors or my mates if anybody have any idea please help me out.
I would be thankful to you.

Has anyone got any news when NATS will be opening there recruitment stages

I can understand your predicament, but I don’t think it’s that unusual for a company to only accept applications from people who already have a right to live and work in the country concerned, while at the same time being unable to assist you in terms of sponsorship.

From what I understand, NATS get thousands of applications a year, and although I suppose they *could* assess overseas candidates who don’t currently have a right to work here, that is probably a gamble they don’t want or need to take.

Probably not the answer you want, but given the current wait to start courses for those who have passed Stage 3, and the delay for those who have recently completed Stage 2 moving on to Stage 3, I can’t imagine it will be in the next 12 months. Pure speculation, though... so who knows?

Cheers, noticed the ANS are open for applications with the process starting early next year.

Remember that ANS only have contracts (currently....) at 2 airports though, each of those with around 20 ATCOs so can't imagine there is a huge demand for new ab-initio ATCOs!

My advice would be to definitely stick out the temporary stop on applications at NATS, get experiences that you can talk in your interview about, and apply when the recruitment window reopens.

Has anyone heard from NATS recruitment recently? I got in on the last batch of the old process and we were due to hear about course dates in August but nothing so far.

Nope, not a peep! However, I did email a few weeks ago and was told there had been a slight delay in confirming the dates, but hopefully we’ll be hearing something in the next week or two...

GandalfGaming2144 30th August 2019 18:59

thxs at least they contacted you

Whris 30th August 2019 19:02

Heard nothing here either.
Hopefully soon!!

I was going to email but as it seems we're all in the same boat I guess more thumb twiddling is the order of the day!

Ft1989 31st August 2019 07:45

Same for me, nothing yet - as I was told August, I was expecting something by the end of the work day yesterday...

Whris 12th September 2019 15:06

Has anyone waiting for course dates emailed and had had a response?

I was told on Tuesday that it's still being arranged and will probably be another few weeks of waiting.

tf412 12th September 2019 16:32

Well, it’s certainly an interesting interpretation of “early August”...

It would be helpful if HR could send round a brief email letting everyone know that it’ll be another few weeks, as opposed to leaving us in limbo, and presumably it would reduce the number of enquiries I imagine they must be getting! Oh well...

Did they say why there had been such a long delay?

Afraid not and I didn't expect to be told really. I'm sure everybody's got their theories but it continues to be a waiting game!

idloveit 15th September 2019 12:40

Does anyone have any links for any online pre-learning material that could be useful for people (like me) waiting for course dates to be released?

I'm just eager to get started!

tf412 15th September 2019 12:42

Have you logged into the Induction portal ("Boarding Pass") that you will have been sent a link to when you had the job offer? If you click on the hamburger menu icon in the top right there should be a link to "Learning" which has some stuff in it (at least it does for me, but YMMV).

EDIT: Apologies can't post links until I have 10 posts so no URLS!

There are also some courses you can self enroll on for free on the Eurocontrol training site (they actually seem a bit more recent/higher quality than the NATS courses tf412 linked above!)

A few books I've seen recommended earlier in the thread:

Air Traffic Control by Graham Duke
Aircraft Recognition Guide by Janes
Air Pilots Manual vol 2: Air Law and Meteorology by Trevor Thom

Worth looking around at eBay and second-hand stores for those as you can get them for next to nothing.

There are also 2 ATC reference manuals that I believe we will use throughout the course. A bit dry on their own though, I think they should become more clear with the benefit of context from our lessons and teachers.

CAP 413 - Radiotelephony Manual
CAP 493 - Manual of Air Traffic Services Part 1

Runway26 16th September 2019 06:52

Do you know which study route you’re going down yet in respect of Aerodrome or Area?

I’d suggest the air traffic control handbook by David Smith. Don’t bog yourself down too much with the CAP publications although there is a lot of useful info in MATS pt1 but by the end of the course you’ll be regurgitating it word for word anyway. If you’re going into Aerodrome perhaps flick through section 2 of the 493 but don’t get hung up on anything you can’t get your head around due to the way it is written in parts

idloveit 16th September 2019 15:39

FAO the above two posters

Thanks for your help! When home this evening i'll take a look at the info you've mentioned. Not sure of any route i'll be taking yet re aerodrome/area etc - still waiting on a course date..

Thanks again.

oh that sounds about right. I presume they haven’t told you where you will be going yet either then?

Correct - been a month or so now since any correspondence from NATS end. All we've been told thus far is we've been successful in the Stage 3 process.

yeah even when you get given a start date it could be a while in the future. I think I found out in July last year and started a course in March this year.

Was that as part of the new process? I think there’s a few of us from the end of the old process with stage 3s in March-May still waiting on allocations. Anyone earlier than that still waiting?

Gingers Have Souls 17th September 2019 08:23

Just my two pence, coming from a background where you have to also learn a very large rule book in a safety critical environment, pre-reading can be detrimental to your learning as you may interpret and learn things incorrectly to begin with. Courses like this are usually designed to teach people everything in a structured manner, for which you need no prior knowledge. Pre-reading of times and regs, in my opinion, should only be done if the course dictates it. However reading up on a general level of how things work probably wouldn’t be a bad idea?

Each to their own!

BARRY_SCOTT 17th September 2019 13:38

If you search ATCO Common Core Content Initial Training you can find the syllabus of what should be delivered to you during your training.

idloveit 18th September 2019 10:29

I've had a call this morning from NATS - my course is 27th Apr @ CTC. Anyone else heard anything? :)

Same for me! Could be a split between old/new process for January/April allocations - but I wonder what happened to Jerez/Global in between?

I'll start a WhatsApp group for anyone on the 27th January course - PM for info.

Whris 18th September 2019 14:07

I'm Jerez on 2nd March! Anyone else there? Flick me a message and will start a WhatsApp group!

Ft1989 18th September 2019 14:12

27th April CTC for me - keep me posted if a chat group gets set up!

Daannn 18th September 2019 14:40

Hello! Been following the thread for a short while, been offered a place on the April course, would love to join the WhatsApp group if one is being made :)

As far as I know there isn't another Global course till October. I asked about it when I found out I had passed.

Samwise1 19th September 2019 12:42

Hello, I'm on the 27th Jan course at CTC. WhatsApp sounds like a great idea.
Also anyone up for a house share?
