I've been lucky (and a bit surprised) to have passed 0 & 1 and now looking at booking my assessment day. I'd applied on a bit of a whim not really knowing what it was all about but the more I look it's seeming very exciting. I just am anxious over a few points I'm hoping someone may be able to help with:

I have a young family and am hoping to have another baby in the next few years, if this was to happen mid training has anyone seen allowances made for this?

We are in the south west, with brs and ext being my nearest airports. Is there much job opportunities here or am I likely to always commute?

The study training period, is this distance based or at a centre and if so where?

Anyone doing this with a young family? If so any advice welcome.

Thanks a lot!

congrats for passing stage 0,1 . I intend to apply for stage 0 could you give some tips on how to prepare for the stage 0 and 1. Any suggestions is much appreciated please.
thanks

No dude - honestly just revise it as you would for any exam. As its multiple choice your brain should be able to pull the info you need. The plane bit (in the paper I sat at least) was only a couple questions, but I suspect they rotate papers regularly so you might have more.

As long as you revise it for however long it takes you to get a good grasp of it, don't stress - seriously. FEAST/DART you really cant prepare specifically for so don't waste time worrying - just get the backbone of the booklet in your head and you'll easily get past that first hurdle of the day.

Hey Mate. Sorry to hear you weren’t successful. I had a phone call on Wednesday and was lucky enough to be offered a place with them.

It must be annoying not knowing exactly where things went wrong for you. Are you considering re-applying in 12 Months time? Barry Scott has given some good pointers. You could also think about joining the military as a Controller if that seems appealing to you?

Congrates mate! And yes very annoying there is no feedback.
12 months? Is it not a 2 year re-applying limit anymore? I have looked into the RAF however living abroad within the last 3 years has caused issues, so now I will just try and do my best to get some experience within ATC before re-applying.

hi everybody
simple question: if you become ATC trainee and pass the process, how long are you obligated to work for nats by contract?

Holidays

Can anyone shed some light on how holiday/breaks work when at the training college?

I've heard there are set breaks but it would be interesting to know a little more.

Well done to everyone moving through the process

I'll be there on the 23rd too mate. I saw someone say that stage 3 end times are much like stage 2 i.e. earlier than advised. He said his group of 11 candidates finished at 2pm. I guess it depends how many people are there on the day but I'm going with the assumption we'll be done for 2-3pm.

See you next week!

Your annual leave is allocated to you, usually between courses but also around public holiday times. You don't get to ask for days off unless in exceptional circumstances.

Hopefully will have a long drive home afterwards travelling down from mid Wales on the Thursday. Trying to just remain calm about the whole thing as others have said better to just try and relax and be yourself, unsure how much I can really prepare. See you next week

Stage 3

Be yourself
Demonstrate flexibility, thinking on your feet, team working, enthusiasm.

Prepare answers to competency type questions. Be prepared to expand and talk around your examples extensively.

Dress smart
Engage with the interviewers if they join you for lunch

Best of luck!

Global ATS

Finally have a start date! Anyone else starting their training with Global ATS in Gloucester on 12th March?

AyrTC 13th February 2018 12:07

A quick question on behalf of my son who is not on pprune. Any TATC’s who went to Global did you take Global’s accommodation or rent privately ? Is there much rental property available?

Do Nats complete all of their ATCO training at Swanwick? I have now seen people mentioning Jerez and Gloucester ? Are they using other training facilities as I was of the understanding that all training was completed at Swanwick

AyrTC 13th February 2018 19:38

Yes FerroNATS at Jerez started to be used this month. I don’t know if it is a “one of “ although if the first course goes ok it will probably be used again.

GLOBAL ATS ( GATS ) at Gloucester have been used on several occasions I think they can only do Basic, Aerodrome and Approach Radar courses.

It has been intimated that in theory you could do your basic course at Global and then join an Area course at CTC however I don’t think that has ever happened yet.

I believe this is all due to capacity issues at CTC.

I rented privately, when I was looking last June there was enough available and it's a bit lower priced than Global's accommodation. They recommended Cheltenham over Gloucester, so almost everyone on our course is living there.

What are peoples experiences with bringing in food? I know there's a vending machine, but that's probably not great if you're (hopefully) spending the day there.

I will forward you his email.

I think it's for 3 years after validation. What are you planning on doing after they invest in your training and the obligatory service is up?

adam llewellyn 17th February 2018 10:24

Good morning,
I am traveling down from Glasgow for my stage 2 on the 27th February. I am trying to plan the best method of travel and organize times etc. I was wondering if you are allowed to take bags into the facility? This would mean I could fly down the day before and fly home the night after without needing to book a second hotel room. My other question would be the dress code? Is it expected that you wear a suit or would a shirt and trousers be enough? Again for the reason of baggage and how much I need to bring.

Any help is much appreciated, thank you!

Hey.

I just sat my stage 2 on the 15th, there was a mix of us in full suits and just trousers and shirt so I think you'll be okay to just go shirt and trousers.

People also had back packs with them on the day. As long as your not bringing in a full fledged suit case you should be good.

Hope this helps!

babis 17th February 2018 17:26

hello, i would like to ask about stage 3 if anyone has some info. they say that the day consists of 3 parts and the third part is a eurocontrol computer based asssessment. Does anyone have any insight of that??

Wipe0ut 17th February 2018 18:05

For those that have completed stage 3 is there anything that can be prepared for the Eurocontrol test of stage 3 ?

Asking out of curiosity. Can't find this info anywhere else.

Stage 3

Hello all!

Just recently passed my stage 2 and got my email invite for stage 3! I've got the chance to book onto one on 08/03, 15 days from now.

My question is for people who have passed stage 3, do you think 15 days is enough time to prepare for it? Or am I sabotaging myself by going for it so soon?

Calhenley 21st February 2018 17:34

Stage 2 assessment

Hi all, got my stage 2 assessment tomorrow morning and just wondering if anyone has any information about why the multi choice questions will be like?

Are they going to be very specific about numbers or is it a bit more vague?

Thanks, Cal.

Stage 1 isn't a particularly big deal in terms of preparing for it. Just do what the email/instructions say which is find a quiet room where you wont be disturbed for a couple hours. They give you practice questions throughout the test too so you know whats coming. Seriously don't stress stage 1.

dFixxx3r 2nd March 2018 10:59

if i have a plane departure from Heathrow at 8.30pm on the stage2 day, can i make it in time ? (with passing all parts of the test and leaving at 5pm as planned)

-also what are the costs of living while on a training salary ? is it enough to live in UK(renting place to sleep, food)

cheers

ATCkmmbbh1 7th March 2018 11:21

Aircraft stats

Does anybody have any advice on how important it is to learn the stats on the aircraft in the final pages of the document for Stage 3?

Thanks!

ATCkmmbbh1 10th March 2018 12:18

dFixxx3r;

As long as nothing major happens to mess with the timings, you should be fine. I completed the day at stage 2 then walked to Swanwick train station and got the train to London Victoria arriving at 17:45.

Probably won't be a life of luxury while training but I think it is possible to live off the training salary!

rickoo97 12th March 2018 11:06

Hi Guys,

With the dress code being smart for the stage 2 assessment day, are they wanting people to come in suit and tie or can it just be a smart shirt and trouser combo?

Cheers
