Need a position in anything related to ATC
Hi, I'm a Spaniard, 22 years old, who did a Basic and ADI course in Cwmbran 2 years ago with an ICAO 5, and I haven't been able to get any OJT. I've phoned, and applied for many positions, including ATCA positions, in the biggest companies and private towers in the UK but nothing.... I also tried NATS, but unfortunetely didn't have a good day on the cubes. (although I'm not bad at spatial reasoning).
My education qualification is Selectividad in Spain, equivalent to A-Levels in the UK with grades B in Maths and A in English. I'm a very hard-working person, who always puts effort in everything I do and who tries his best, I'm quite ambitious. I also absorb and understand information quickly and I'm good at multi-tasking and in working under pressure. I would like to know anyone that could help me get OJT or an ATCA position or any position related to ATC that suits me. Pay doesn't really matter at this stage, and I'm willing to relocate. Also any advise on options that could improve my employability are welcome. Please PM or answer me. Thanks in advance. ;) |

It says you need assistant experience but an ADI rating might help. |
Also, have you tried HIAL?

Hi there,
just to cover all possibilities and since your spanish won't be a problem, have you tried applying at FerroNats (mainland Spain) or Saerco (Canary islands)? |

I've just applied.

SafeSkys Air Traffic Control Services, Air Traffic Control Engineering, Bird Control & Wildlife Management have tendered for Gibraltar.
|
So you failed the selection process twice... A bit of a warning to all of you thinking about self-sponsored route, I'm afraid.

Hadn't heard but you're probably right.

I was told NATS had won again. |
Swedish language might not be a requirement, worth a shot.

From what I hear from both Saerco and FerroNats the average performance of the new atcos has been well past dreadful. For both of these companies there have been cases where a student failed his/her 3 attempts at OJT and they just transfered that person to another tower to start there the whole process again.
Mind you, I heard about a month ago that FerroNats had reconsidered that practice and was not going to relocate a dude who failed 3 times at LEVC. There also seems to be a guy at LEZL who also failed the tird time but I'm not sure if they plan on reposition him. :ugh: In any case I know that both FerroNats and Saerco have started operations at several towers with less than the minimum amount of atcos approved by the spanish air safety agency (think of any serious, respected and independent institution... this one is the opposite :() claiming that the "excess" atcos where in order to allow for vacations and enough rotations but that they can start with fewer and hire more on the go. Call me a cynical (I do it every morning to the mirror as a sanity exercise :E) but I don't expect that once the own staff of FerroNats/Saerco is responsible for training the next batch there will be a single drop-out, all will pass brilliantly. The point I'm trying to make is that if you are desperate enough you could try again applying with both FerroNats and Saerco as they will need new hires, you already have their negative. Nevertheless I'd suggest you carefully read both their terms and conditions and the legal framework you will be bound to and then decide if you REALLY are that desperate. Did you know that to quit the job you have to give them notice 7 months in advance? Or that you can be fined 4,5 MILLION € for not attending an english exam or similar trifle things? As said, read carefully before your sign over your soul. |
Why would you not attend an English exam if your employer instructs you to? Is a certain level of demonstrated proficiency in English not a regulatory requirement? Doesn't sound like a 'trifle' to me.

Or that you can be fined 4,5 MILLION € for not attending an english exam or similar trifle things? The problem that has arise is that they law seems to be very vague on specifics. Hence the comment comparing the requirement to be proficient in English to any minor issue which suddenly finds the full force of the law behind it. |
Apologies for not being too clear on my previous post.
English proficiency is certainly a vital requirement for international aviation to work. However if for whatever reason I can't attend to a scheduled exam and instead would have to wait for the next one... say a week later and months before my current rating expired, I COULD be charged within the current legal framework. Here is a link to the current law (spanish, sorry). On all the towers that were privatized the controllers got letters informing them that they had to "voluntarily" request the OJTI rating or risk being charged with "obstructing provider change" as stated on that law. As said before, the information is available to the general public, read it and decide if you really need that job so badly. |

Please go up ^^

Work as an atco in Spain is getting really hard. Besides the 2 private ansp are not hiring many people, they are also short-staffing the towers. I guess in the medium term they will need more atco because it is impossible to continue with so short staff and underpayed.
Working is always better than nothing, but be in mind that the private ansp in spain are screwing their staff, with long shifts and minimum rest time. Nevertheless, check the pm. |
Please go UP ^^

Leeds aren't recruiting at the moment, however they are happy to take your CV and a covering letter. Might be worth a shot emailing them.

Couple of questions for you:
Are you getting feedback on the roles you are missing out on? I see some comments for some of the things you have tried, but maybe its worth looking at exactly why you are being passed over. You mention one case where people had aviation experience or similar - if you are not working at present, why not look for any job relevant to the industry. Go be a baggage handler even, anything that gives you some extra exposure and shows a commitment to the industry. (Before people scoff I have teed up an airport customer service role as Plan B to my ATC plans and my interviewer was very interested in this. Also, I don't know about Spain, but baggage handling here isn't all about loading and unloading planes, they look after towing, signalling and a variety of other tasks. Meanwhile you are meeting people and earning some cash. What does your CV and your cover letter look like? If they are not in your first language maybe get someone to look over them? You can have great skills and experience, but if you present poorly on paper you will never get the chance to speak to anyone. Make sure your cover letter addresses each specific role. If you are looking down the barrel of more psychometric testing, maybe you can get feedback on any similar tests you have done and either passed or failed? Again, something I have done and they were quite happy to oblige. Anyway, like I said, just some things that might be worth looking at, seeing as you are still searching. Good luck with it. |

I was working at the Airport Customer Servive in my airport for 1 month (Palma de Mallorca), but due to a company change, all workers where fired, and new workers were contracted. I've also been working for the Duty Free Shop for 6 months. Yes, I'm currently trying to look for a position in the Airport. My CV has been checked, not my resume, however I got positive feedbacks about it. Yes, I'm practising psycometric tests, I'm good at them, as I said the only problem I was having was with the cube test, but now I'm quite confident on them. Thanks. |

Did you apply for the Sumburgh job? ADI only and they're open to students

Allegedly IAA (Ireland) are taking another class of students this year.
IAA Student Controller page However caution is advised. Read the terms and conditions very carefully. Especially those relating to payment while training. |
