Gavin Kukard 29th Dec 2021 01:26

Anybody heard anything further? I got an email from Air Services just saying thanks for the patience, and that they will continue reviewing our applications from the 10th of Jan onwards.

Does anyone knows if we still have to do the virtual assessment centre day or last online testing was in lieu of assessment centre day?

Judging by DavidBall's feedback above, it looks like this is all the testing we'll be doing I reckon. Waiting anxiously to hear some news.

Also, random question: Are there any other older blokes that have recently applied? 30+'s?

Hi Gavin,

I am turning 35 soon. I read that 35 is not an ideal age to be ATCO but lets see, how would it go. I just do my best and hope for the same.

Gavin Kukard 4th Jan 2022 04:37

Yea I'm even a bit older than you ey :D Haha! I think older folks have some useful attributes to offer, things like life experience, resilience to stress, less likely to panic easily, more likely to be stable at home and work, etc etc. But yea I have read somewhere that very few over 40's (not there yet FYI) make it through the training, but some that have, have made brilliant ATCO's, so maybe we're okay!

Have you heard of any applicants for this round that have been notified they were unsuccessful?

No nothing mate, I don't know anyone who has applied, only people on this forum. I am not so worried about the training my issue is to get through the selection process. I dint even think to come this far. let see, what's come next. let me know mate if your hear anything.

Regards,

Yea same, had a chat with TYFY on here too, but also don't know anyone else. Yep i'll let you know as soon as something comes through. Cheers!

One downside for older trainees is family understanding the commitment necessary during training and after.

Don't get too hung up on the age thing. Yes it's true age makes it harder in general - harder to learn a new way of thinking, harder to absorb and integrate the plethora of information and rules into a coherent whole, harder to achieve the right balance. And while it's also true that statistically you're pushing it up hill, the key point is you're being measured against a standard. You at 35 will have to work harder than you at 25 but maybe the 25 year old sitting next to you will be finding it harder, in the end it all comes down to how each of you individually performs against the standard.

All you can do is give it your best shot and keep on plugging away.

All good points, thanks!
Hopefully see you down in Melbourne soon :)

I was 50 when I was accepted and started. Rare.

Wow thats very reassuring to know! Where are you based and what discipline are you in?

Gavin Kukard 9th Jan 2022 23:05

Yeah I read about that too. There were 140 ATCO's that accepted early retirement packages I believe.
Hoping for a response from them early this week already! The wait and uncertainty is killing me :D

DavidBall1884 I'm trying to reach you mate, have sent you a PM.

Gavin Kukard 10th Jan 2022 07:25

Okay so I got an email today with the invitation to do the video interview. Anybody else got one?

Allyjay 10th Jan 2022 07:26

I got the same email

Hey mate.

The message system for this seems bugged, tried to reply to your PM but said i was out of memory, not sure of what to expect for the interview, i think its just answering pre-recorded questions, time will tell. Looking to do en route and head to Brisbane, actually looking to hopefully defer the offer if successful at this stage, not sure if thats a thing at all or whether they keep your scores in the system for a while or not.

No harm telling HR when your earliest start date is and letting them work it out, as has been alluded to - they really can’t afford to be picky with this right now.

Hey man, ah okay. Yea not sure about the message system. I've heard that problem come up from a few others as well.

Best of luck with the interview! On indeed there are a few common questions asked by airservices on there. Normal stuff really, I've just never done the recorded type of interview before.

Let us know how you go!

Gavin Kukard 14th Jan 2022 06:07

Hey AllJay did you end up doing your interview? I did mine this morning, and although I think it went okay, I feel like I could have answered some things better. Nerves got to me a little I guess.
