OSH Air Venture 2003 Overwith

In case anyone is interested we ended this years EAA show in OSH with well over 18,000 operations (in seven days), no fatalities, and no pilots hurt (unless you count sunburn and hangovers).

We did have three controllers injured and sent to the hospital when the trailor out at FISK rolled over with them in it during a brief thunderstorm.

Cool

Mike;

That thunderstorm may have been brief but it was indeed wicked.... You should tell them about all the tents blown down too... Lots of soggy campers. Made me glad I was in better accomadations ( Yeah, I know, not the HO JO <G>)

regards

Scott

PS. For those that don't know, the controllers at OSH wear BRIGHT Pink polo shirst so that pilots can SEE them... Mike was one of those folks...

I have had the good fortune of visiting Oshkosh from the UK for the past 3 years (including last week - some regretably awesome weather).

Yet another fantastic ATC job this year - when The Weather Channel says you are under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning, they are not kidding!

I have always been impressed by the very fetching pink shirts, but much more impressed by the outstanding ATC handling on the radio - unique!

I guess I am not too surprised by the "No Tours" sign at the door of "The World's Busiest Control Tower" in present circumstances, but where can us long-distance Oshkosh visitors get to meet these chaps and ladies - they do the most incredible job. Perhaps we could visit the trailer on the flight line before the afternooon shows?

One day I too WILL land on the Orange Dot! (but it is an awful long way from Elstree...)

Position and Hold;

The pink shirts come down to the NATCA tent from time to time as well as other controller from around the US. Hopefully you stopped by our tent not to far from the tower and next to the Bratwurst concession and directly next to the weather tent. Something we were running to on many occasions to see how far out the next cell was so we knew when to tie down everything...

As a 16/yr twr and 8/yr app controller, one thing missing in my career is standing on the runway at Oshkosh, paddle in hand, waving the aircraft side-by-side for take-off. Two at a time, barons mixed with cubs with bonanzas with 172's! And it works! (won't even go into the ultralights just off the right side of the runway doing T/G's.) I envy those of you who've worked it; those are memories for life!

Cool

Canoehead;

They are using radios for the most part now for the departures... The wands are always at the ready though <G>....

Working out by the runways on the MOCOW's (moble carts) and standing at the edge of the runway is my favorite spot to work, next is out at FISK, then the tower. Stacking four aircraft of various types, and safely launching all four prior to the arrivals touching down requires excellent timing, and yes it is just plain fun.

As Scott said, many of us controllers (PINK shirts) hang out at the NATCA booth during our breaks, so that we can get a chance to talk with the pilots and controllers that fly or drive up to OSH.

I did look all over for the pilots of G-BYZD and finally saw them on Saturday afternoon as they were taxiing out for departure. There are so many airplanes at OSH that finding one particular one is like finding a needle in a hay stack.

What totally amazes me, is that when we arrive in OSH on Thursday prior to the show there are maybe 20 or 30 airplanes parked on the airport, by the first day of the show there are over 14,000 airplanes parked at OSH. In all seriousness, if it flies, you will find it at OSH.

We are trying to set up a evening cook out by the control tower for next year so that the pilots and controllers can get together and trade war stories.

Cool

Mike;

That is an EXCELENT idea... Is it going to be just any pilot can come over or are we going to give out tickets to this thing??? <G> I could see us getting the folks on AVSIG and PPRUNE something fun to bring home as well as talk about.

Is this something that the pink shirts came up with, or did Ruth or a combination of y'all think this up??? If you thought it up, get Ruth and Greg involved so as to help fund this little party... I think THAT would be a whole lot of fun.

regards

Scott

PS. I sent Ruth an after action report on OSH and what I thought went well and what we needed to improve on as well as what we could do next year.

PPS. Any pilots or controllers out there who went this year have any comments on what you saw at our booth and what you might like to see????

Scott,

I would lean toward just pilots being invited but if other organizations want to help and participate it would be fun. The idea is to give the pilots and controllers a chance to sit around and trade stories and enjoy some good food.

The challenge is getting the EAA to allow us to hold a cook out by the tower.
