Is it "TURKISH" or "TURKAIR" for THY?

I'm not sure if this question has already been asked previously. I've tried searching and googling but yiel no satisfactory results.

ICAO DOC 8585 states that the radio telephony callsign for Turkish Airline is
"TURKAIR"

But pilots on the air refuse or even worst ignore when we call TURKAIR. They insist that their callsign is TURKISH.

Is there some background to this that they refuse to be called TURKAIR ?

Thanks in advance.

Same issue in Muscat.

Officially however, it is Turk Air.

I'm not allowed within a donkey's roar of a radar console, but for my advice is to just roll with it, as long as it doesn't affect things too much.

"ICAO DOC 8585 states that the radio telephony callsign for Turkish Airline is
"TURKAIR""

....you wouldn't happen to be German, would you?

Cant really see any problem here.
If he calls himself Turkish-then he s Turkish,if not-then not,no prob !
This is a safety issue as well-he will expect a msg that begins with Turkish, whilst Turkair mite cause confusion, and if u dont want to say things twice or appreciate ur time.....
Some AALs call themselves *American* but there are some that will say *American Airlines*- makes no difference to me at all.

Exactly the same situation with Libyan Airlines.

ICAO code: LAA

ICAO callsign: LIBAIR

However their guys always use 'LIBYAN'.

Right up there with certain EK pilots that insist on 'Emarati' versus the correct callsign of 'Emirates'!!

I refuse to use/respond to the previous, and will only respond to the latter

And at the end of the day if they were trying to be pedantic then they should use 'Etihad'! After all, we know who really owns them!!

....hand grenade with pin out, rolled into the thread quietly

THY were using "turkair" more than 10 years ago...actually "turkish" in use...
ICAO DOC 8585 is not updated... THY's mistake.
