Skyguide Instructor

I would love to live in beautiful Switzerland. Consequently, I would like some idea of the terms and conditions for the Instructor positions. Skyguide website doesn't give any help and search of prune hasn't thrown any light either.

On the bottom of the advertisement there is a phone number for the chief instructor, David Kocher, +41-931-6293.

The contracts have traditionally been very good, with a generous relocation allowance to boot.

very good training system, great simulation equipment and some top-notch instructors. good luck

Topdrop,

Very nice part of the world but be sure to research cost of living when reviewing the package....VERY expensive in both Zurich and Geneva.

pm for info if you like.

Check that telephone number. It should either have a 43 or a 44 after the +41.

Phone Number

126.7

Good point, but that is exactly how the number is listed on the Skyguide job website.

It should have a Zurich area code, whatever that is, I've been away for too long to remember it

Correct Tel No

+41-43-931-6293
would be the correct one to reach head of training.
Packages are generally good, and the job is pretty easygoing. Cost of living is rather expensive, but salary would be way above average. Good flat 3bedroom approx 2500.- Swiss Francs, tax approx 25% for expats.
Try to get hold of Mr Pile or Hadley, these guys do this job, might get more details from them.

Is this why the failure rate is one of the highest in Europe?

Quote:tax approx 25% for expats.

This is not true. The tax rate varies and depends on the location(meaning canton you live in),number of children etc. as well it is the same for all no matter if you are an expat or Swiss.

Quote:Good flat 3bedroom approx 2500.- Swiss Francs

Find me a three bedroom appart. for this price and I'll move immediately, prices for that kind of accommodation are more than 3000CHF.

Good luck,you gonna need it.

HEY ROOMER!!!

I think you are thinking about someone else. There is no chance for me to come back since I have never left,I can be only on the other side of the phone line, the more expensive one.

Talk to you on the phone, maybe.

One other thing, where I am right now,you definitely can not find an appartement for that price.

Cheers,

Gianni

"Is this why the failure rate is one of the highest in Europe?"

Without seeing specific statistics on this, highly unlikely. If it is true then perhaps Skyguide maintains high standards and expectations, and are not prepared to compromise those standards just to increase qualification rates.

The graduation rate from the 12 month "rating" courses was very high, what happens with qualifying during operational on-job training is beyond the control of the training school.

I rented a 3 1/2 zimmer apartment in Oerlikon, about 10 minutes from the Zurich HB, SFr 2200.00 per month. In that area, at todays rates, I would expect a 3 bedroom (4-4 1/2 zim) to be closer to 3000 / month, if you are closer to Zurich you pay more, further away (Dubendorf etc) expect to pay less.

Again, it is a very good opportunity if you enjoy instructing

Exactly my point

This is exactly my point. My opinion is that Skyguide college doesn't provide adecuate training for the students and this is why the failure rate is too high afterwards.

There are certain groups that have one student qualified at the end. Most of them fail at the simulator for certain area,Zurich or Geneva Upper or Geneva INI's.Even if some mannage to pass SIM checks they are almost certain failure in the room.

And I have been couple of times there and you should see what noncense things are students being evaluated for.

There are instructors who have never seen a real ACC and they teach the ACC Radar Sim.

Are these previosly mentioned "top-notch instructors"?

Of course as everywhere there are exceptions, and there are some real professionals there as well. The job is easy going and most of the time you don't have a lot to do.So if you like working from 9-17h this is not a bad idea.

Good luck.

Tides of change

Gianni17

People move on and and new ones join the school.

The people who were instructing there 12 years ago were, in my opinion, "top-notch".

Most of them are probably retired by now, but they all had recent experience in either APP or Enroute. Some of the part-time instructors did not.

Nowdays, I have no idea who is there anymore, but as you say, maybe the quality of instruction has declined, a perfect opportunity therefore for some new blood (with a current licence) to join the team.

topdrop, give it a shot, it is an awesome part of the world to live and work in

Smile back to the green pasture and a glass of .....

skyguide training (success or failure rate) is about 50% from beginning to end of their training, which lasts just over 3 years.
training school success rate is very good and equal to any other training school in europe.
the training school has suffered from having their budget cut, training time cut and are forced to use a high number of part time instructors in order to cover the large training comittment.
many of the part timers come from the units, have only a few years operational experience, which means they do not really have the required depth of experience to train on a basic course. training atcos on the job is different from basic training and needs a varied atc career and life experience too.
the more experienced ones just want to stay at home and control.
the training school would i believe, like to have more time to train to a higher standard, but the operational units need new blood quickly so training has been trimmed to that which is required by the eurocontrol ccc. shame really because it used to be really excellent and the end product saw an atco who knew about aviation in detail. thus proving that a budget saving is not a saving in training or producing a professional product. save on your future and you're making a false saving.
the full time instructors are very professional and have a wide range of experience spanning europe, the near and far east and the southern half of the planet too.
some of the "A team" from the 1990's have left and some remain which is to skyguides advantage.
if you want to work for skyguide then contact them and apply, overall it is a very good deal, in a beautiful country, with low crime and politicians that have no idea what they are doing, so what's new ?
would i work there ? too late for that, but if i could i would.
i guess that is enough for now ..... back to the green pastures and a glass of wine and the atc grape vine for me.
