Equipment do cost money, but I wounder how much a day of closure also cost?

As for Oslo, the "snowtrain" is at max about 60 vehicles..if I remember correct. Just one sweep along the runway and taxiway and all is cleaned, swept, sanded/threated with chemicals and measured.
For sure our layout is better suited for keeping the airport operational (atleast until they build the new terminal), with less taxiways and terminals.

I suggest someone show the bosses this link

Red face

Tak, Final Vectors.

I don't know how many snow machines there are at LHR or how effective, but there won't be 60 I'm sure. The argument that it is a rare occurance, is flawed. There was a big cold front of snow in '04 (Feb?) which closed most, if not all London Airports.

There has to be somewhere for the inbounds to go, and the parking at alternates will rapidly fill up as probably happened yesterday, and there must must have been a few a/c landing on fumes. Pilots and ATC must have been working very hard. (Glad I was off!)

This is surely a safety argument for LHR and the other main airports to gear up more for the winter (and not to run out of deicing fluid either as happened in LTN a few years ago) If they can clear a RW in Oslo in 15min then that is surely what we need to do (The CAA will probably insist on it one day?). Isn't LHR the busiest APT in Europe?
