Oi! I wasn't late and I was an early start too.
Didn't see many office staff around though. I wonder if we will get recognition with a swanky awards ceremony? :hmm: |

Let's not forget those of us at the airports that took large numbers of diversions whilst having to deal with all the crappy weather and closures etc. What did we get? square root of F*#k all!!!

A quick question from Norway....how come a few cm. of snow can shut down EGLL? Don't they have snowremoval equipment and cleaning plans, to cope with just little snow like today?
I'm so amazed by this. In Oslo we allmost never close a runway for more than 15 minutes to clean it, and use the other one for combined operation during that time. About a week ago we had like 40cm in a day with just minor delays (we "loose" about 4 arrivals for cleaning the runway) All my sympathy to you all who had to sort out everything in the air today;) Regards FinalVectors Oslo APP |
Final vectors ,
Agreed , here at Heathrow we seem to struggle with snow. Remember though you might get snow every winter, here we don't. We only see snow fall like this every 20 years or so. You buy for the average snow fall and when you get more you work hard to clear it. Your average is going to be a lot higher than here, where my 7 year old has only seen snow twice. |
I've seen the snow clearing at Oslo. Even in heavy snow, one RW was used for departures and arrivals while the other is cleared with de-icing bays next to the RW holding points. It was impressive. How much would it all cost for LHR to gear up with as many snow ploughs etc as Olso? There would still be diversions with only one RW in use, but how much did LHR lose yesterday, let alone their customers?
|
Probably nowhere near as much as it would cost to buy, keep, maintain all the equiptment required for, as autothrottle says, an occurance that is rare.
louby PS - 250kts - I'm glad I'm not the only one irritated aby where/were - there/their/they're and lose/loose! ;) |
'Equiptment'??!!
It would be good to find out how much it would cost exactly. I wonder if the fire trucks could be converted for dual use duties to include snow clearance. Heathrow's reputation must be worth something also.... |
I dimly recall an exceptionally heavy snow fall at Stansted in the late 60's I think. Out came the snow clearance vehicles that hadn't been used for years. It wasn't until the entire length of 23 had been swept down the centre-line that someone noticed that most of the wire bristles from one of the machine's brushes had fallen out. Where were they? Scattered down the entire length of what had been swept! FOD with a vengeance. Use 'em or lose 'em I suppose. Mind you, Stansted then wasn't what you would call "busy".
