JNB's never ending congestion.....
Just a question to the guys and girls of ATNS Johannesburg. What's with the congestion lately? If there are 3 aircraft at the holding point there is congestion and you will now be placed in the queue. Now, if there aren't any aircraft at the hold, there's congestion in the TMA. I joked the other day with you guys and asked if the congestion was in your cafeteria... But seriously, what's the story with the "congestion"?

Looks like everybody from ATNS Johannesburg is way too congested to give you any answers. Maybe its all true what you say and the congested ones don't have anything to say in their defence. Probably canteen food to blame.

Well Area North 126.70, it's still anybody's guess. Maybe it is the canteen, that would their best defense. I like that CAMU crap, they sms you this so you can already expect delays without ATC telling you.... Clever....
"The CAMU crap" as MC so elequently puts in his post, is a normal Flow Control message, sent to the users after a joint decision by ATC and CAMU staff has been made that flow restrictions are either being implemented or are likely to be. He should also be aware that the changes to the process came about as a result of ATNS listening to and working with their user airlines. Good TRM is what I call it.

Shame sorry guys. Now I understand why Joburg is so congested (almost sounds like a bad flue).... ATC is to busy talking to CAMU the whole day, therefore less time to actually do the job (which they used to do great) they're supposed to do. Understand now, thanks for the clarification....

Why would that leave a bad taste in 'ones mouth? I just love to get an answer to why JNB comes up with this so called "congestion"...All jokes aside, but it doesn't look like there's a valid reason for it.

I don't know why the guys and gals from JNB can't or won't give you a reason. Maybe its still the same old story about staff shortages and therefore closed sectors.
Maybe you should write to ATNS in Isando and ask them why they can't or won't cough up the money to get guys from overseas to help out or try harder to make the local guys stay. Having said that, a person should just add that more money would obviously mean more route fees by the client, more approach fees, higher ticket prices etc etc
World wide shortage of ATCs is somewhere around 15%...... increasing. The delays or congestion as it is known in JNB, is here to stay!

Thanks, yes makes sense I suppose. Under staffed would likely be the reason. Don't get me wrong, I personally think the boys and gals from JNB ATC are some of the finest in the industry. They're always helpfull and have a good sense of humor. Just wish this "congestion" problem would disappear.

Under staffed Absolutely - but whos to blame - Management??
Controllers are leaving!!!!
That is why you are experiencing delays mate - and it will probably continue and even get worse!!
Good luck to all the JHB guys and gals!!

How would you like us to make the congestion problem vanish? Moving between eight hundred and fifty to nine hundred movements a day in and out of JNB with the staff shortages, bad weather, equipment problems (now and then) and some other challenges that also require our attention. Remember too that we are servicing the 13 airfields below the TMA at the same time. All this with your safety in mind, unless its not that important to you. You've probably not seen a response because we are sick and tired of repeating the story over and over again. Fact is, things at JNB are just getting busier and busier, and somewhere along the line somebody will experience some sort of delay. Talking of delays, you probably do not know that the average delay per flight at JNB is one second. That is way below any of the benchmarks that ATNS measures itself against. Are you aware that we have increased the number of movements at JNB from 52 to 56 per hour? This all against a 7% increase in movements for the year which equates to close to 40 000 extra movements per year. The numbers can boggle the mind and that is not the idea. All I'm saying is that the upward trend exists and it does not look as if its going to slow down. Therefore you may have to wait it out now and again. Be thankful that it is only one second and not one hour. Thats it for now. Got to go and work.

Dont worry it is coming at Cape Town as well!!!!
5 pending resignations in the App pool and no new controllers being trained there at the moment.
As far at Head Office is concerned all is well - God Bless us all!!!! I think Wrenelle is worried about, but how do you recruite staff when the salaries are so much more overseas and they dont have the political uncertainty that this country has. And besides the non-existent HR recruitement/ policy, one can only say the Titanic sank slowly! One tried to be positive and defend the Company but it never seems to end..............................

Ok thanks for the explanation! Won't bitch and moan the next time I hear "standby for push and start, congestion at the holding point".

I really feel for you folks. Today, I think we have more South Africans in DXB than in SA! What a mess back home, but the international community is not aware, or doesn't care.
