Non Standard Flights

Hi All,

I have a question and I hope this might be the place to get the answer.

I occasionally conduct aerial photography flights, the majority of which have one or two sites which require flying in controlled air space. I understand there is a form I can get that will allow me to apply for permission to conduct such a flight. Does anybody have any idea where I might be able to acquire it?

Just as a bit of background: We have on previous occasions rung the aerodrome concerned and asked for permission on the day and permission has been granted (my thanks to the helpful ladies and gents at Heathrow and Bournemouth).

However, on other occasions permission is denied because we haven't asked for permission in writing. So far we have just taken that risk. A colleague had tried to get code whiskey in the past, but found it was pointless because quite often the weather on the day scrubbed the flight.

However, having spoken to ATC at Heathrow on a previous trip I was told I could get a form for a NSF which would have 11 months validity. I rang the number given and had no joy. After checking the AIP I rang the director of airspace dept, who promptly passed me over to GA dept at Gatwick. Gatwick said I need to get permission from the ATSU concerned.

If anyone can shed any light on where I can get this form, I would be very grateful.

The information in the AIP is correct. Maybe you misdialled.

Unless alternative arrangements have been made with the appropriate ATC Unit, an initial telephone call shall be made to
the ATC Operations Department (as detailed below) to ascertain the notification required to operate flights in Controlled Airspace
involving aerial tasks which do not follow published routes or notified procedures.

(a) for flights south of 5230N, (except as at (b) and (c))

London Area Control Centre (LACC)
ATC Operations, Box 9, NATS, London Area Control Centre, Sopwith Way, Swanwick, Southampton, Hants, SO31 7AY.

(b) for flights within the London Terminal Control Centre (LTCC) area of responsibility (except as at (c))

Note 1:

For applications using the NSF E-mail address ([email protected]), the ATC Unit to which the
application is being made should be placed in the ‘Subject’ heading (ie LACC).

Applicants using the E-mail facility should ensure that the file sizes do not exceed 5MB. Zipped files are acceptable.

Note 2:

For applications using the NSF E-mail address ([email protected]), the ATC Unit to which the application is being made should be placed in the 'Subject' heading (ie LTCC or London CTR/London/City CTR/CTA).

Applicants using the E-mail facility should ensure that the file sizes do not exceed 5MB. Zipped files are acceptable.

Applications are to be made using the LTCC Application Form available by E-mailed request from the aforementioned address.

Note 3: For flights north of 5415N, operators are strongly recommended to apply for NSF for operations within Class F airspace.

Note 4: For the purpose of this requirement, a formation flight of civil aircraft intending to operate in Controlled Airspace is considered to be a Non-Standard Flight.

Note 5: Applicants using the NSF E-mail address ([email protected]), should ensure that the file sizes do not
exceed 5MB. Zipped files are acceptable.

I will give it another go. Misdialling seems a reasonable explanation.

You may already be aware, but some pilots are not - the NSF approval is subject to traffic and other factors at the time. On the day you have to telephone the ATC Unit to see if the operation is feasible and you may well be given the OK in principle. However, ultimately it's the controller working the sector who makes the final decision. Anyway, enjoy yourself!!
