Me neither,
35kts has been used and a 30degree angle.
The correct answer is 25kts, 40 degrees = 20kt crosswind component.

In the example marked on that picture, 30 degrees has been used and a 40 knot wind. The line is drawn down to the 40 knot arc, then straight down for the crosswind component and across for the headwind, 20 and 30 respectively.

In the other example "If there is a wind on runway 03 reported as 350/25, what is the crosswind component?" The angle is 40 degrees (the difference between 350 and 030) and wind strength 25 knots. So trace down the 40 radial till you get to the 25 knots arc, then straight down for your crosswind component of about 16 knots.

New Applications

There has been a change to the applications page......

We are continuing to review our requirements for Air Traffic Controller recruitment and training. At present applications for the ATCO role remain closed, but a further announcement will be made before Christmas.

I had previously emailed NATS and they advised they would reopen September/October.

mts1,
sorry for posting the wrong answer, stevep64 is correct, it is 16kt. I haven't used one of those charts for a long while!

perhaps a little explanation is in order chaps.

The Runway number is usually correct to within 1 degree of the heading it is on.

A Runway 08 will be on a heading of 080 degrees.

So it tells you the direction of the runway.

The 330/15 format for wind is the wind heading (where it is coming FROM) and the wind-speed in Knots. In that example, it's coming from a heading of 330 degrees at fifteen knots.

Hope that helps,

Phil

Not true. Runway 24 could have a heading of anywhere between 235 to 244 degrees.

Going by your logic it would be impossible to have a runway with a heading ending in 2,3,4,5,6,7 or 8.

Regarding the numerical test, do any problems imply using the quadratic equation formula??. i.e. x^2+ 34x+21=0

Sheps:
Thanks for your reply, and sorry this is a late one back to you! I've still heard nothing back after trying again - it's just frustrating and odd that no replies are received. It's comforting to know it's not just me though so thank you for validating that! Congratulations on passing too maybe I will meet you in the future during training!

Crazy Voyager:
Good luck with the medical! I was not asked about any preferences, though when I emailed HR after I got results that I was successful and accepted on to the training course, I was asked then which I would prefer. Having said that, I sent back my preference and never received a confirmation of that preference and have nothing back from anyone since! That's what worries me slightly! But if other people are in the same position then I guess the situation is nothing out of the ordinary.

GAPSTER:
Thanks for your help too regarding preparation etc., it's great to hear from a qualified ATCO!

Hopefully all those waiting for updates from NATS, it will not be too long before one of us receives something!

I am in the same boat, waiting to book my Stage 1. I presume with the extension of this delay for new applicants that it could be sometime yet during next year so i've been looking at other possibilities in the aviation industry. I recently applied for 2 jobs working with easyJet in their operations control centre department at Hangar 89. They seem to have quite a lot of jobs going at the moment and keep adding daily!

What happens after the psychometric testing?

Hi guys. I passed stage 2 in July and was sent an email with a link & password etc to do a psychometric test to be completed within a week. I completed it in the requested time, but I haven't heard anything back yet! I have tried (about once a week) to contact NATS on their recruitment number but only ever get 2 leave a message & no-one ever calls back. I've also tried 2 contact the main switchboard but can never speak 2 anyone there either.

Any advice or information greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Frustrated Candidate!

GTA_Turbo,

Don't worry, there are many people in exactly the same boat (myself included), it's just a case of relaxing, sitting tight and waiting for Stage 3 dates to open up and everything will get moving again.

I know it's slightly frustrating but just makes me want it even more!!

That's great, thanks.
The question I would ask though is, would they tell you if you had been unsuccessful? Or are we just in limbo?

Yes, they would tell you if you'd failed Stage 2. Also, from the NATS website:

"If you were successful on assessment day two you'll be invited to complete an online occupational personality questionnaire"

You said you've taken the tests after Stage 2 so you're all good.

For what it's worth, if you read back over recent months on this thread, there are a plethora of people in the same boat. It's just a case of waiting

I emailed them today and the next wave isn't until new year now.

GTA I'm in exactly the same situation as you. Had my stage 2 in July, sent off the questionnaire and haven't heard since. Unfortunately I think it's just a matter of waiting.
