BBC1: "Breaking News - computer failure grounds UK flights"

Just heard on the news (BBC1) that "computer failure has grounded most flights in the UK". Seems quite serious.

More than 2000 flights affected all over Europe.
Total delay at the peak was over 150000 minutes.
0830 CET starting to accept traffic again.
Delays should continue for most of the day as the situation recovers.

BBC1 news says its West Drayton thats "gone down" so to speak?

Is that just poor research (ie - its actually Swannick) or is it just West Drayton thats down?

This really does make you wonder doesnt it. If they can get something so close to home wrong, how on earth can we trust the reporting standards from afar... hmmm...

And someone from the BAPA has just been interviewed - he said "there was no back up system" (I presume he means for CFMU) [flowman?] unitentionally hes alarmed the reporter/interviewer and he now appears to be using that statement out of context. *sigh*

Are they?

Is everything operating normally? There are no out of the ordinary delays this morning then?

I think not.

The vast majority of the travelling public they don't give a **** whether it is West Drayton or Swanick that is causing the problems. They just want to know why they are facing 4+ hour delays.

To save all the specualtion, it's the Host Computer System at LTCC. Not Swanwick. Not Flow.

It was restarted by about 0530z but obviously it won't go back to normal for quite a while.

CFMU systems have been working normally throughout. There is no "flow computer" problem.
Someone from London ACC better qualified than I will no doubt give us the correct details later. They are a bit busy at the moment.

There was a routine shutdown last night. Problems arose after the startup this morning.

Normally startups pose no problems whatsoever but every now and then...

Swanick Computer MX Wed Night

Can anybody explain why Lydd,SFD,DVR and Hurn sectors were closed last night for computer maintainance with no prior warning to airlines?

We had really bad delays last night not to mention the fuel we had to use for reroutes.

This could easily have been put on the Network News !!

The numbers showing now indicate that everything will be back to normal in the worst affected sectors (Berry Head, Hurn and London Upper) by 1500 utc. 1200 for the others.

One report I heard said the computer was down so Air Traffic Controllers were having to direct the flights. Dear God - they'll all be killed................

It would have been included in the Network News if anyone had told NMC.
Even the LACC supervisor seemed a little perplexed that the maintenance was started so early and apparently he did not have the authority to postpone it. The whole thing was done and dusted by midnight according to the night shift, so it doesn't appear to have been necessary to start the intervention at that time.
As you saw, there was still plenty of demand when the sectors were combined. The combined sectors had a capacity of 20 flights per hour, the demand was 60 flights per hour. Delays were inevitable once the decision was taken to start at that time.

Sounds like Bill Gates and co had something to do with writing the software

Was this connected to the subsequent problems this morning? (disclosure: I'm researching this for a news story)
