Heliport mentioned a while back we should post pictures taken from our machines, so here goes my first one.

I took this one a few days ago right after some friends had landed and were getting ready to shut down. I have also included a link to some other pictures I had previously posted a while back.

I just put up new pictures on my webpage I hope you like them,

http://homepage.mac.com/helipilot/PPRuNe/IKA.jpg

This is a picture of a 230 I flew for a while, it is now doing EMS in MS/USA, its nice to fly once you are off the ground, but its got some nasty habits, not too much power for hot and high, great helicopter to fly IFR!

Well we seem to have had pics from Europe, the Antipodes, North America but unfortunately Guns pics from Africa didn't come out yet so here's a couple from Cameroun in the meantime. They're of operations in support of the Tchad-Cameroun pipeline (nearly 1200 km in length).
Sorry this one's a bit out of focus as the digital zoom on my little camera is a bit Mickey Mouse:

Some shots of Iraq taken in January this year.

The first two are at Al Rasheed Airbase, which was reported as 'liberated' by the US today. The third shot is at Mosul civil airport in the north of the country and also features an Iraqi 727, which is probably now the 'ex' 727 seen in the press at Baghdad Airport recently.

The UN aircraft were evacuated shortly before hostilities commenced.

Pics hosted by JE..many thanks John

One of my personal "bests" .. just a shame I took this pic in 1999 on a low quallity setting on a 640 x 480 cam they do not even make these days. :{

But here we go .. bit of history in Sierra Leone. As the war was coming to a close the UN came in .. so my ship, the Mi-26 and then a Mi-8 in a HIGH Hover ... I personally do not fly a high approach landing at all (SA Airforce doctrine) but it has saved my a55 on many occasions.

The UN these days do a much lower quicker approach and the Civillian Russians are using "our" technique. :8

Ok guys I know you guys are used to this beauty but I got a massive hard - on when I eventually heard and saw a Chinook. 10 Sept 2000 at Cockerill Military Base.
You might remember Ops Barras where rebels (West Side Boys) took 11 British (Irish) Soldiers captive when they went off the "normal route".

South Africa's pride ; The Rooivalk. Close sources told me if it was not for American pressure - the British would have taken the Rooivalk. This is from a Pilot's viewpoint .. and this is a rumour network ;)

Bokkie is a very old Mi-8 that is argably THE helicopter that won the war against rebels in Sierra Leone. She was THE helicopter / Gunship / Transporter that did it all before the Mi-24's. The Name BOKKIE (antelope) was given to her by a very good friend Chris Louw who died of cancer a few years ago. Even after 5 years in the African sun, stripped and faded - the red words still stands out - have a look when you visit Lungi International next time ... oh and a salute to her will be in order :ok:

MD902 Explorer has replaced the AS365 Dauphin at London Air Ambulance.
The Dauphin flew over 5,000 hours and some 37,500 take offs and landings. It will spend a sunny retirement in the Caribbean as VIP and tourist transport.

The £4.2 million twin engined Explorer will be based at The Royal London Hospital's rooftop helipad. Sponsored by Sir Richard Branson, Virgin HEMS will be used to transport and treat severely injured patients on around 1,000 missions a year.

And now, let's dredge up some memories from you pros....

For those who learnt to fly on a Bell 47, here's my baby. Now on Private Cat in the UK, fully restored and in great nick, and does about a hundred hours a year (and probably 200 hours a year cleaning and fettling!).

A perfect day's pleasure flying.... Crossing Ullswater quickly to avoid the military traffic always screaming down the middle of the lake.

Here she is in the late 60's/early 70's. She is an Agusta machine, a G3-B1 Sioux, one of the first 150 the AAC took in 1964. (50 from Agusta, 100 from Westland). Anyone remember her (XT 132)? and does anyone recognise the location?

http://homepage.mac.com/helipilot/PPRuNe/XT132-3.jpg

I've traced 18 ex AAC pilots who have her in their logbooks, most of who learned to fly on her. One of the pleasures of owning a classic machine is making contact with those who flew her. If you have any AAC B47 memories it would be great to hear them (we could start another thread).

Ah heck....he gone and done ruined it for us!

I have been looking for just such a place like that to retire....was gonna put a shovel and a tail rotor blade over my shoulders....and start walking until the third person asked me what those things on your shoulders are. At that exact point....I was gonna dig me a big ol' hole.....throw the shovel and tail rotor blade into it.....kick the dirt over both of them and call that location my final resting place.

I thought if no one knew what a tail rotor blade was....they knew nothing of helicopters.....and if they did not know what a shovel was....they knew nothing of hard work! And....that fellow Rotorheads sounds like Paradise to me!

B47,
Those are some really nice pictures! And that is one piston helicopter (the only one) I would absolutely love to have! Congratulations!

Crop Duster,
Actually while at the airport (taking pictures of crabs), I could hear piston planes buzzing near the airport, I asked and was told there is lot of them around working on Banana, Papaya and Palm plants, I was told it was mostly Piper Pawnees.

A Bell 412 a crop duster? Never seen one, there is a about 5 Bell 212's cropdusting around here, spraying herbicide on pot and amapola for the federal police. It makes my skin crawl to see them work, they spray fields up in the mountains, hidden between trees, and upslope, so they start at the bottom with some airspeed and end up at the top with a pedal (almost hammerhead) turn, and as it manuvers like a bird, you can see the downwash mixing up with the chemical coming out of those loong spray booms while listening to that 48FT main rotor spinning those almost 2FT wide blades, I can't help to get a grin on my face.

I have to get some pictures of that.

Manzanillo port is also a popular stop for tuna spotting boats.

15th Jun 2003, 11:16
Blender, I flew a Pawnee about a hundred hours one summer. Alot of fun to fly empty but loaded with 120-130 gallons at 3000 feet elevation it was a dog. No comparison with the 500 gallon 1000 hp Thrush I fly now.

That sound you mentioned from the rotor of the 212 is even better when you're sitting there doing it. Just after daylight and just before dark, it'll give you chill bumps all over.

Those guys that are spraying the drugs must have big gonads or could be over half nuts. A couple of guys from here in north La. are down south doing it in Thrushes and AirTractors. Not worth the $115,000 they make.

John Eacott

Having a quiet weekend at home scanning photos, I thought these may be worth sharing. In 1976-79 Bristow operated 4 Bell 212's in the Brent Field to shuttle the workers around the field, and I had an engine mishap one morning. Not wanting to fly 100 nm back to Sumburgh, and denied the largest pad (Brent B) because a 234 Chinook was due in later, I put down on a spare deck and awaited the black hand gang. I landed to one side so that North Scottish could get in with a Bo105.

The engine was deemed U/S, but after defuelling we had to wait until cooler evening temps to ferry single engine back to the maintenance hangar that we had on Treasure Finder (IIRC). I was assured that Redhill had approved the S/E ferry, and was daft enough to believe the engineers!

When we got to Treasure Finder, no such approval was sought nor given (young and gullible?), then the engineers showed me the shrapnel holes in the tail and tail rotor

Anyway, it was a salutory lesson, in making a judgement call to "do the right thing" and get the 212 to our hangar facility.

I crewed and maintained this HO3-S in the Coast Guard. It was resurrected from the boneyard and completely overhauled to flight condition. It will be placed in the Smithsonian Aircraft Museum later this year. Prior to entering Coast Guard service the Sikorsky was operated along with five others by the Greyhound bus company which employed them as a taxi service in the Boston area.

http://homepage.mac.com/helipilot/PPRuNe/H3.jpg

I also crewed and maintained this HTL-1 picking it up in Miami and flying in it to Floyd bennett Field in Brooklyn, NY where we installed floats. We later flew both the HTL-1 and the HO3-S to Boston and placed them aboard the CGC Eastwind for her cruise to Greenland in 1952. The HTL-1 crashed after the cruise killing the pilot and the flight mechanic.

A pilot and his young son were winched to safety after their seaplane somersaulted and crashed on take-off. The aircraft wound up floating on its back after hitting a rock on Lessjavri Lake in the north of Norway.

http://images.thesun.co.uk/picture/0,,2003300585,00.jpg

Pilot Julius Eriksen and his six-year-old son escaped and clung to one of the plane’s floats.
Watchers on the shore raised the alarm and a Royal Norwegian Air Force rescue helicopter raced to the scene from the nearby Banak air base.

http://images.thesun.co.uk/picture/0,,2003300584,00.jpg

A winchman was lowered and the lucky pair were hauled aboard unhurt. The plane sank shortly after their escape.

For those of you who think that West africa is all just jungle and mangrove swamps, here are a few shots of our 365N3 (which I think is the first in Africa) which is operating in Cameroun in support of moperations on the Tchad-Cameroun pipeline project. Most of our flying in Cameroun is in the mountains, which are really beautiful.

At Limbe, on the coast at the foot of Mount Cameroun:
http://homepage.mac.com/helipilot/PPRuNe/LimbeWaiting.jpg

The landing site is at 9500 feet, but the N3 is a very good hot/high machine. The temperature was around 12 centigrade on the day.
http://homepage.mac.com/helipilot/PPRuNe/MtCamerounHLS.jpg

The summit was making one of its rare appearances. At 13435 feet, it's West Africa's highest:

What is the meaning of the number 2 on your tailnumber (XC-SCT)? Is that a heli of the secretaria de comunicaciones y transportes? Not to long ago, I ferried on of their King Airs from MEX to MFE (also XC registered) ...

Yes SCT means Secretaria de Comunicaciones y Transportes and the #2 means the main SCT is the Falcon Jet they also have, along with about 25 other aircraft, SCT does the same thing the DOT in the U.S.

We mostly fly around the country scouting for good places for new roads, airports, bridges and such, but when the hurricanes strike we usually spend about a month doing disaster relief carrying sick, food, water, medicine, looking for improvised runways for the IAI Aravas to take over. It never fails and we have usually been out every year since 1996.

You say you got a ride in one of the KingAirs, I love going around in the red Cessna Citations the ones that do the verification of navaids and procedures, those flights are soo much fun, in one day they will fly to 5 different airports do the app a couple of times and do the most awsome manuvers I have seen a private jet do, (except the acrobatic lear 23 I saw in Acapulco a few months ago, an american fellow who does amazing things!) If you ever get a chance hop into one of their flights!

These pictures were taken by a friend, he's into destroying Marihuana and Opium crops.

This is a very dangerous job for many reasons, but it is usually a very intersting and challenging, it is done by two agencies, one military and one civilian and most of the time they work as a team.

This is one of their 212 flying alongside an IAI Arava (for air support)
http://homepage.mac.com/helipilot/PPRuNe/Bell212AravaLR.jpg

The very tall plants all around the helicopter and crew are all fully grown Marihuana plants.
http://homepage.mac.com/helipilot/PPRuNe/212CannLR.jpg

The little plants you see the 212 landed on, are all young marihuana plants.
http://homepage.mac.com/helipilot/PPRuNe/Bell212FieldLR.jpg

This is what they are supposed to do after cutting down the plants, burn them.

IHL the info for the airplane is the following:

Designation: IAI 201 Arava
Manufacturer: Israeli Acft. Ind., Israel
Crew: 2
Seats: 25 troops
Engine: 2 x Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A34
Engine Type: Turboprop
Engine Thrust: 560 kW (750 shp)
Propeller: 2 x 3 bladed constant speed Hartzell propellers

From what I understand its a great airplane for short fields, with great payload.

I once saw from above (live) how one of those, while landing on a narrow road, hit a small (but tall) dirt mound with the wing tip, it cart wheeled to a stop with 14 people on board, we landed inmediately to help out, and that little egg shaped fuselage kept everyone on board alive, its a tough airplane. This happened in Honduras.

Your photo of XT 132 was taken at Middle Wallop if my memory serves me right! I trained there in 1965, and returned as a QHI in the late 60s 'til the early 70s. I've checked my log book and XT 132 was one of the Sioux I didn't fly, so you can't add a Royal Marine to your list unfortunately.
Below is a photo of XT 219, a Royal Marine B47 Sioux in less happy circumstances. Aden, Feb 1967, from Hover to Bother in one second. The only thing stopping us going over the edge was one of the blades stopping down slope, otherwise we'd still be bouncing!

Whilst Europe & Canada are suffering extreme bushfires, the Victorian Alps have had one of the best snowfalls in decades, not only a good depth, but genuine powder snow, almost unheard of in Oz. Temps down around -6C for a week, so we haven't done a lot of flying on our skier shuttle operation: here's our helipad at Falls Creek, it took two Kassie's an hour and a half to level it off for us to use when the snow eased off!

A 'catenary' landing-pad on Alcan's Kemano pipeline, Canada.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v140/Rotorheads/Gallery/Catenary.jpg

The pad is 1/2 mile from the mountains on each side, and 700 feet in the air above an avalanche zone.
It's supported on three inch cables, a mile long, attached to the mountain by 15-21 rock anchors each.

Any Canadian Rotorheads landed there?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/Rotorhead/Catenary_Pickup.jpg

The catenary at Powerline Pass, between Kemano and Kitimat, British Columbia is owned and maintained by Alcan aluminum of Canada. Myself and two other pilots (Dave Newman and Clint Sarver) were the only pilots trained to do so until I left the VFR side and pursued a less stressful life. Since that time, another pilot did a few lifts there using an Astar, not fun or very smart if you look at the size of the pad.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/Rotorhead/Catenary_Pad.jpg

The Catenary system holds the powerline conductor above the valley floor below, replacing six towers previously wiped out by avalanches. The only way to inspect and service the insulators is to be dropped off by helicopter on the pad you see below and to the left of the machine.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/Rotorhead/Catenary_lift_off.jpg

When I get a bit of time, I will post some more pics of that job. Very busy at home and work these days.

rotorcaptain: Seriously interesting task you have there. Not many folks have to watch out "due to the Peregrin Falcons roosting above" in their daily job.

I note that the photos were: "A few shots my Flight Nurse took while we were inbound to the Ahwahnee Meadow" Why can't we all have a nurse with us every day? I think that many people (of both gender's) could benefit from this simple practise of having someone there who's job it is to look after the flight. Just think how much more you pilot people could relax, knowing that you were going to be nursed at any time?

Well, you did say 'Flight Nurse'? :}

Yep! Thats her alright. A standard '63 model UH-1B. Never saw action in Vietnam. Spent some time with the military in one of the scandinavian countries. Bought back by Summit helicopters eventually. Prior to this one had the worst cream, orange and mission brown paint scheme ever seen on an aircraft.
The company that owns it has 3 JR's and a LongRanger. All the same basic scheme but different colours. They stand out.

ALM conducting a Class D fixed line sling rescue. There were 3 climbers overdue on Mt Patterson in Banff National Park. We searched for them, and found them in a small cave at 9,500' ASL, I slung the wardens to the cave entrance on a 100' line, they scrambled inside as I reduced altitude to give them some slack. They rappelled the injured party down to a suitable pick-up spot a few meters below the cave entrance.

Had an early morning flight today that took me close to one of mexico’s largest active volcanos, Popocatepetl, its about 25 NM from my base, it is a very active volcano that often emits ash and water vapor above 30,000 FT., it's spectacular to see this happen.

This volcano is a little over 18,000 FT, and as you can see by looking at the altimeter I was already at 12,600 FT and it still looked like I had way to go to the top. This was a 206L IV, great altitude machine with the optional T/R Kit.

You can’t go anywhere from Mexico City without going up to at least 10,500 to clear the monuntains.

Not being a whizz on the new 155 technology....most mediums experience a drop off in VNE as the DH gets higher...in the B412 it can drop off anywhere from around 7 - 20 knts depending on the OAT at 6000 ft.

With your slick machine at over 6000 with that impressisve IAS, does Eurocopter account for a decrease in VNE as Bell does??

If it does....how close are you to VNE???

[Basic VNE = 175??]

212man
28th Sep 2003, 17:53
OMR,
the 155 TAS actually increases with altitude up until around 6-7000 ft and thens tails off again. This still gives a TAS at 9-10000 equal to that at sea level!

Fuel burn stays pretty static until 6000 ft then drops off significantly: 330 kg/hr at sea level, 270 kg/hr at 10000 ft, both with about 157 kts TAS.

Vne is 175 kts up to 2000 ft, then reduces to 172 at 4000 ft and thereafter at 3 kts per 1000 ft. The IAS scal has a red line that automatically moves to reflect this.

No gear limiting speed either!

Yeah, that's FLIR on the copilot's inboard display. You can also show it on the pilot's side, or mix FLIR, Radar, or EGPWS with nav overlays. (The RDR-1600 search/weather radar, TCAS, and EGPWS is fully provisioned but not installed on this one.) She's also about 200lb lighter than an equivalently equiped 412EP.

BlenderPilot and autorotate,

This is a Djinn SO 1221, I logged about 150 H crop spraying back in 1976, and I crashed one.

The engine produces compressed air which is ejected at the blades tip, hence no need for a T/R.

Dear ATN, (and Ned)

Thanks for the info, you are my hero, flying one of those must have been a true adventure.

Did you have yaw control? How?

ATN
31st Oct 2003, 16:00
BlenderPilot,

Yaw control by a rudder like fixed wings, in hover the engine exhaust provides the airstream to the rudder, not very effective though, depending on the crosswind for example to turn 90 to the right it may be easier to turn 270 to the left.

Cheers

Thanks to BlenderPilot, here a few shots of the B47 I spray in. B47-G2A. It's equipped with a AgNav GPS, smoker, hydraulic spray system, and Crop Hawk spray computer.

http://homepage.mac.com/helipilot/PPRuNe/RollingOffPad.jpg

These were taken while spraying winter and spring weeds. This allows the farmer to simply plant the next crop and save valuble soil moisture.

http://homepage.mac.com/helipilot/PPRuNe/SprayingSpring.jpg

It takes about six minutes to put out a load and then back to the trailer for another one. If all I need is product I can be rolling off the pad in 60 seconds or so. These were taken while carrying 60 gallons of spray. The B47 wouldn't hover up off the ground like the picture shows so we simply pull power and roll off the pad by adding forward cyclic. The brown grass behind the truck has already been sprayed, planted, and the milo is just starting to come up. That's why we sprayed this field with the 47 to keep from injuring the emerging crop.

http://homepage.mac.com/helipilot/PPRuNe/SmallPad.jpg

This is my other ride. A little bit faster and will haul quite a bit more. Working speed is 140 to 150 with 500 gallons.
