Nice photos 407D, but you may have to focus your camera a bit - it almost looks like your bucket is attached directly to the belly of the 212!!
By the way, was your drip torch crew as pleasant as ours was:

Good eye Squirrel, I knew you'd catch that one :ok: Yes, I belly hooked the bucket, I slipped over to the dark side :p ..and it was good. :oh:
And NO, Craig's ground crew was not as nice as yours. I haven't seen "C.S." yet this year, but "I.T." was flying with us all winter...with a beautiful 6 month old boucing baby boy on her lap. Dale and Her are in Mexico as we speak, after an incredibly good winter of Skiing at Chatter Ck.

Must admit 407D, I left Carl out of the last post - would have been tougher to brag about the crew with him there - reflecting on it, I felt bad, so here he is with the ping-pong balls!

NICE PIC 407.....
But did you have the ping pong machine set on 4 fast!!!...does a pretty good job....i was doing some incendary work with NPWS at jindabyne ( snowy mountains NSW australia) in 2003 fire season and we smoked up a few ridges and spurs on 4 fast late one afternoon and the next day all machines were gounded till 300pm due smoke....i wasnt very popular that day due to no wind and operators not making any tunover.......but hey i was only doing my job!!!
nice phots by the way mate! you deliver some quality stuff!! :)

Thanks BT, I'm not sure what the AIDS settings they were using that day, as I was at another heli-pad on the 212.
The fire indicies were quite low, so it took some effort to light anything.
How are your 407 hours coming along?

You want me to fly a turkey what? I flew this thing up to 9000' today for some thirsty Turkeys!
The Turkey Guzzler. What they do is bury this thing, so just the dome is exposed. It catches rain fall and it can not evaporate. Then there is this little thing that sticks out from the side and the wild turkeys can get water to drink in a dry year....
Sounds like a good place to go turkey hunting this fall!

The S-76 above has his landing gear out, this makes sense over land for a quick landing, but why over water?
Does it make a difference for a ditching?
Is this standard procedure for a low level hover?
Telstar
7th Jun 2005, 11:20
I asked my uncle this once who flew on the Sea King. He said it was to stop the GPWS warning from going off. Sorry, it was called something else not GPWS I think but long story short its to stop an alert that your too close to the ground with the Gear up.
I wonder does it help speed stability in the hover?
Blackhawk9
7th Jun 2005, 13:00
Cyclicpushover and Telstar, it is standard procedure to have the gear down for over water ops (and land to for that matter) as the main floats are mounted on the inside of the main gear doors and if you go into the water it assures a smooth activation of the floats , as an explosive link goes off between the door and the strut to allow the door to come up against the airframe and inflate the float, the gear down also helps stabilise the A/C in the water by acting like a keel and also lowers the center of gravity to also help with stability, you do the same with Super Pumas and similar a/c for the same reasons.

Big H,
can you give us some technical requirements for the photo regarding the quality you need, etc., e.g. what resolution camera?
I've got loads from the camera on my phone, but I think 1.3 megapixel might be a bit rough-cut for what you need....

great installation of the engine that also gives you a tail rotor drive shaft instead of the usual elastic band drive.

When not running, the blades are only a few inches above the bubble. As they spin up, they also lift up, maybe 9" or so above the bubble. When flying, there's no concern (after getting used to them) about the blades hitting the bubble, and you do not have to fly it any differently than those with the blades much higher. They actually offer more stability in hover work, as there is less pendulum effect. However, I'd still prefer higher blades. I've knocked my head on these many times during pre-flights.

Quick Release,
You don't have to fly it any differently, in any conditions that I know of, because of the low blade design on these. The blade stops prevent the blades from drooping low enough to hit the bubble. Again, when the blades are spinning, there is ample (relatively) space between them and the bubble. It is a unique design, but provides a very smooth ride.

These jungles are very dense and you can fly for a long time without having a suitable landing spot.

Just wondering what images people enjoy each month. Do you want military one month and then civil or would you prefer to have one of each for each month.
Only reason I ask this is I am going to be out travelling and shooting a lot over the next few months so depending on what people enjoy I might shoot some specific images for John and Blender to have a look at for monthly calendars.
Cheers

Before I got the superb Apache shots, I had prepared another August page using a "historic" shot from my old collection. Down the track, would photos from some years ago appeal as an alternative calendar, or would the majority here rather have modern helicopters only?

I agree with zhishengji751.
Leave it to the calendar producers to choose the subject.
We've had a good variety since the calendars started - and haven't had a bad one yet.

Close to Pouilly, in Semur-en-Auxois (about 10NM NW), their is a chambre d'hote (also small castle). The owner is a R44 pilot.

Hello Steve.
Speaking of memories, I do still recall well the response from an EPNER trained tp to a very green FTO in the LHS of a SHOL trial aircraft who, having completed taking data alongside, had asked him to "Translate across now, please".
"à travers", indeed  :D :D
I last saw Doris looking sorry for herself in the Farnborough Flying Club hangar several years ago. I wonder if she's still there?

Yes, the Chateau Saint Sabine is OK. Rooms start at 55 Euros.
Dinner from 30 Euros plus wine. Good food and a superb wine list.
I saw the small castle you mention. It looked very impressive from the air.
Just in case you decide to go to the chateau, here's a picture showing the helipad.
http://chste-sabine.ifrance.com/gene1.jpg
The picture (provided by the hotel) is a little misleading because the pad is hidden by tall trees on the approach.
You can just see the tops in the bottom right of the picture - and they've grown since.
You'd obviously do a high recce first, so no problem.

I really am not brave on that, At first I used to be afraid of heights (wind etc..) But I studied things as retreating blade stall margins quite extensively on my simulator and know the margins in many circumstances.
Power margins on the R44-II seem to be very good, rotor seems to be more the problem ip retreating blade stall. For the R44-I, it was always the motor that quit first, even at FL85 and before VNE.
I built this up very progressively on many flights in many circumstances. Mostly now I would cruise between FL75 and FL85 because I feel its the best in many circumstances. From FL105 rotor limitations limit effective TAS, and consumption goes up so you are starting to loose again (not to speak of slimmer margins).
AT 12000, in a local mountain flight I stopped not because the machine couldn't do more (2POB, 2/3 fuel), but because the manual indicates NO FLY at any weight.

I had forgotten about a great picture of a 427 and I just made into a widescreen version, its at the bottom.
I thank everyone who sent pictures, I got some really good ones, unfortunately some of them didn't have enough resolution to be used in the calendar, I hope some of you can rescan them or get the originals so that I can use them in the future. Some others were not very suitable because the intersting part would have to be covered either by the calendar and logos or the desktop icons.
The two top calendars are in 1024 x 768 pixels, the last are widescreen versions.
Thanks for sending the pictures.

The Power has to be one of the easiest helicopters there is to fly, stable, fast powerful, the Fadec's work perfectly, avionics are nice, lots of T/R authority, caution panel will almost tell you if you're sleepy, I think I'm starting to like it.

BP,
I'm tempted to suggest something similar on the "Private Flying" forum covering light aircraft. Before suggesting such a thing however, I'd better be prepared to volunteer!
Given that, is there any chance of Emailing me the PPrune and monthly graphics that you use in those? genghis @ engineer.flyer.co. uk (spaces deliberately inserted to avoid web trolls, just re-type) will get me.

Is that your photo, and do you have a larger image (than the one on the host site) available to be used as a calendar background?
Thanks

The photo was send to us by the vessel, so all credits go to them.
On my computer the picture is normal size, but with the same resolution (1219-810 125kb). If that suits I can e-mail it to you.

Hello, just wandering if anyone has any good photo's of the North sea machines ?
I know there is "Rotorheads around the world" but I am specifically looking for European North Sea, i.e BA Helicopters, North Scottish, BCAL, Bristow, BIH, Bond, Maersk, Helikopter Service etc.
Cheers NST

When you guys spray like this, does any of it enter the cockpit?
whopwhop
26th Nov 2005, 20:32
No because we maintain forward speed, by the time you come back round for your next run the spray has settled and starts doing what it does best.......KILL

I have to say speaking as an ex professional photographer in the late 70’s early 80’s I.e. pre-digital in the days of darkrooms and chemicals, that these photographs are absolutely outstanding to glossy magazine quality. I feel some of these photographers should be recognised.

'tis the season to be jolly, bah humbug, etc etc ;)
This month's offerings include both standard and widescreen format: I am still putting the standard at 1024 x 768, maybe a straw poll to let me know if this is still a high enough resolution for everyone? The widescreen is 1680 x 1040, which should suit most users.
The snow scene is courtesy of Ron Kellenaers, who took the AS532UL Cougar as the opening display of the 2005 Axalp fire power demo. The LtSt6 Swiss Air Force Cougar fired off 128 flares in the one pass: more photos are at Ron's site, www.sgniederrhein.net.

The Antipodean offering comes from Whangaruru, Northland, New Zealand; the photo is by Neil Wellwood of one of his R44's spraying gorse, and the pilot was Steve Pascoe, co owner of TwinCoast Helicopters.
